The Invitaion of Language

This term we learned linguistics and I known something about it.For some people,language may not even be considered a worthy subject for academic study,but I think its neceary to reconsider how much we really understand about the nayure of language and its in our daily life.However,what is language?Language is a system of arbitrary vocal system used for human conmmunication.All language have three components:a sound system,a system of lexicogrammar and a system of semantics,and language is intimately related to the societies and individuals who use them.We use language to make text.meanwhile we need five modes of manning-making:linguistic,visual,gestural,spatial ang audio,words and images are organized on a page to create a newspaper;images,sounds and gestures are intrgrated to create a play or televisionprogram;words are spoken in a soft voice or typed in a small font to convey a particular manning.Languge is a social semiotic and communication,can only take place effectively if all the users understand human interaction.All in all,language distinguishes us from animal because its far more sophiticated than any animal communication system.We may be confuse what makes our language advantageous over animal”language” The well-known philosopher Bertrand Ruell once observed something to the effect”no matter how eloquently a dog may bark,he cannot tell you that his parents were poor but honest”so human language can creat new meanings and flexiable.We can called design features.There are four features: a arbitrarine arbitrary relationship between the sound of a morpheme and its meaning even with onomatopoetic.for example the dog barks bowwow in English but 汪汪汪 in Chinese.There are some misunderstandings about onomatopoeic effect may work at the same time.For example the murmurous haunt of files on summer eves.If you read it aloud you may feel the connection between sounds and the meaning.Arbitrarine at the syntacyic level.By syntax we refer to the way that sentenves are constructed according to the grammer of arrangement.Syntax is le arbitrary than words especially in so far as this kind of order is concerned.Here we have to looh at the other side of the coin of arbitrarine namely conventionlity.As learners to say this way you cannot change.b duality it means two leves of structures,at the lower level their is the strecture of sounds,at the higher level there is the structure of words.The lower or the secondary level-sounds,which are meaningle but can be grouped and regrouped into words.Therefore stratification as the infinite use of finite means.This is important for the working of language.A small group of rearranged into an infinite number of sentence.Duality makes it poible for a person to talk about anything within his knowledge.c Creativity Language is resoureful.It makes poible the constrution and interpretation of new signals by its users.We can create new meanings that have never been said before.This ability is one of the thing that sets human language apart from the kind of communication that goes on.For example between birds they can only convey limited calls,but they cannot create new rules.Language is creative in another sense its potential to create endle sentences.d Displacement human language enable their users to symbolize objects,eventsand concepts.which are not present at the moment of communication.The homeybee’s dance exhibits displacement a little bit He can refer to a source of food,which is remote in time and space.When he reports on it.Our language enables us to communicate about things that do not exist or do not

yet exist.We all knoew that language have meaning.There must be some functions which existed in it.There are many basic function of language like Jakobson;language is above all ,as many semiotic system for communivation.Halliday proposes three theory of metafunctions of language,language has ideational,interpersonal and textual functions.a Informative Function When language is used to tell what the speaker brlieves to give information about facts,or to reason things out.Information ststements are often labelled as ture or false.eg:Although a little bit ugly,Mark is a straight student.For most of people the informative function is predominantly the major role the language.Language is the instrucnent of thought and people often feel need to speak their thoughes aloud.b Interpersonal Function By far the most important sociological use of language is the interpersonal function by which peoplr estibilish and maintain their status in society.eg;Dear Profeor,Honey.cPerformative Function The performative function of language means that speech can be used to do something performing acts.The performative function of language is permarily to exchange the social status of persons.d Emotive Function It’s use of language to create certain feeling in hearer.The aims to starle arger soothe worryor please.This function is also to diued under the term expreive function.The expreive function can often be entirely personal and totally without any implication of communication to others.e Phatic Commumication language used for establishing an atmosphere or maintaining social contact rather than for exchanging information or ideas.such as;ble you sneezes violently.f Recreational Function When language is used to amuse such as a baby babbling.The repetitive rhythms help to control the dame:potery writing,gives them the pleasure of using language for its sheer beauty.g Metalingual Function Certain kinds of linguistic studies or terms for the analysis and description of particular studies,to clear up intentions words and meanings.For example we can use the expreion in word book to talk about the sign book itself.After learn the language,I realized that language is not just used to say words,but also expre our emotions.Wecan communicate with others flexiably and exactly in proper occation.I have already got a broad understand of human interaction in social semiotic and communication.Because language plays a central role in our daily lives as individuals and social beings.Meanwhile it makea our life more intersting ,we must pay attention to it.
