A Letter to God Ⅰ Introduction
At the beginning of the movie “The Color Purple”, Celie was in labor in anguish, when she was fourteen, she had gave birth to a baby who was her stepfather's.Her stepfather sold the baby, even threatened Celie that “apart from God, you'd better never tell anyone.” Then, she can only pour out her troubles in life to God.In the telling, she rarely mentioned the names of men, all just calling “Sir”, “father” or “he” instead, in her inner heart, these men do not deserve a name, at the same time, this expreion also revealed her deep feeling of fear, as if the man's name can hurt her.She feared everything around her life, she dare not fight against, she couldn‟t expre herself freely, what only she could do was just looking at the sky to tell God what the real thought was in her mind.Here, I‟d like to share my own opinion about what Celie want to say to God does.In the following context, I'd like to describe the letter to God like this: first of all, I will introduce the situation I talk about, which I use the third person;then, I will show you the content of the letter, which I use, the first person.Ⅱ The situation and content of the letter
2.1 Selling of her baby

2.2 Separation of her sister

2.3 Advice to Sofia on her husband
Sofia, having a heavy physique and a personality of fearle, fighted against all the injustices, as well as fists.Facing Sofia Celie didn't know what to do, as Harpo could not do anything about Sofia, soon, Sofia knew Celie encourage Harpo to use fist to conquer Sofia so as to maintain the “system” of stability, but she was very sorrow, she left the family and broke up with Harpo.Celie started to question herself, why did her do like that, what was her faith, God or her sister, she asked God painfully.“Whether am I right or wrong? What I have done to Sofia? I have suffered so much pain, why couldn't I be merciful, she had no need to suffer this, all women and men are equal, maybe I should be in favor of her, God, and can you tell me what should I do? Well, maybe I can fight against men together with her, what we should do, men need to do as well, and men can share the burden of housework with us.I start to regret about what I have done to Sofia.I hope I haven‟t hurt Sofia.But, now, she is leaving, I can‟t do anything to change it, the only thing I can do is—praying, hoping that she can live her life easily without worry.”
2.4 The encouragement of Shug on Celie

2.5 The revolt of Sofia to the mayor
Sofia is a brave woman who has resistant spirits, when the mayor insulted her, she slapped in the face of Mr.Mayor right away, which led to her plight.Sofia had succefully resisted the oppreion of black men, now;she resorted to God with the feeling of fear in front of the white and finally bowed.Celie knew Sofia's plight, she tried her best to help Sofia, what she could only do was to bring up Sofia's children.Sometimes, she prayed to God, “what Sofia had done are the things we would like to do but never dare to do, I should say I envy her, she is a hunky-dory woman, but the world is so dark, which lets her become the victim of the society environment.If the result is in this situation, I'd rather she didn't revolt at that time, as for her only her own, it can change nothing at all, which just sacrificed in vain.We are both human being, why should we be so different, it's so unfair to us.I hope that one day;both the black and the white can treat each other equally and friendly”
2.6 The maid of Mrs.Mayor—Sofia

2.9 Reunion between Celie and Nettie

At the end of the story, Celie gets together with her sister;we know how sorrowful they are after having been parted for almost 30 years, however, and we can say the ending is still perfect.What Celie had told God and what she hoped had already become reality.
