新型步兵在摸索前行中初见雏形
2011年9月，正在塞北驻训的三连官兵得知一个喜讯——新装备到了。上士杨强带领的六班接到一项令战友羡慕不已的任务：提前返营，参与新型步兵突击战车的加改装试训论证。

“车载火炮、重机枪呢？导航定位系统、新电台呢？无人机在哪？咋就两台空壳子„„”杨强迫不及待地向机关人员发问。

旅领导道出原委：装备还未定型，内外部结构怎样，车载信息化设备如何安装，火器配备种类数量等，都还没有确定，需要官兵与装备厂家一道试训论证后提出方案，总部验收后再定型。
面对两台“裸车”，以及一大沓拟配发装备的图片资料，杨强和战友们感到无从下手——靠上级？上级给出了转型方向，还在急切等待他们的试训报告；靠厂家？只有他们提出明确的需求，厂家才能进行加改装；靠外援？这种新型步兵突击战车全军都没列装，没有现成经验可循。
闻讯赶回的连队干部了解情况后，为承担试训任务的官兵打气：“转型没有现成的模式可套，更没有成熟的果子可摘。我们既然是探路者，就应该在摸索前行中蹚出一条道来！”
此后一年多时间里，担负试训任务的三连官兵铆在训练场，每天工作十几个小时。那段时间，试训现场通宵达旦工作的场景时常出现。
按照总部的构想，新型步兵营有数十种火器，连属火器有10余种，其中每件装备在车上的固定、上下车的携带方法、不同位置的射击动作，每一项都要练1000次以上。有的装备没有实物，他们就用各种材料做成模型进行替代训练。
艰辛的付出，换来了丰收的喜悦——
2012年底，一份翔实的加改装论证报告上报总部，很快获得通过。
2013年7月，崭新的突击战车驶进营区，各种新装备陆续配发到位。

指导员孙玉杰一直有个心结没解开——上等兵朱俊杰带着伤离开了部队。

新型步兵到底新在哪？旅参谋长王中举介绍说，与传统步兵相比，新型步兵机动性更强，新式突击车时速可超百公里；火力更猛，增加了狙击枪、单兵火箭等近10种火器；信息融合能力今非昔比，增加了无人机、指挥信息系统等大批信息化装备„„
