有个读书人家里很穷，却很爱面子。有个晚上，小偷到他的家里来行窃，却没有东西可偷的，就说：“晦气，碰到了穷鬼！”读书人听见了，就从床头摸出仅有的几文钱，追上去，拉住小偷，轻轻地说：“你来得真不巧，将就些吧，请把这几文钱拿去。不过在人家面前，你可千万不要随便说，给我留点面子啊！”

There once was a poor scholar who really saved his face.One night, a burglar broke into his house but to find nothing to steal.So he cursed:”damn it, he is such a poor beggar.” After hearing those word, the scholar reached for several pence from bed stock, caught up and stopped the burglar.He said to her gently:”I’m so sorry that you made a wrong-time visit.Here are several pence.Please accept it for God’s sake.But please do not tell others the things happened tonight.Save my face!”

Text 5 戎夷离开齐国到鲁国去。碰上天气酷寒，在鲁国城门关闭后才赶到城边，只好跟他的一个门徒在城外露天过夜。夜晚，天气越来越冷。戎夷便对那个门徒说：“您把衣给我穿，我就会活下来，我把衣给您穿，您就会活下来。我是治理国家的杰出人才，为了普天下的利益而爱惜自己的生命；您，是一个普通人，不必吝惜自己的生命，您把您的衣给我吧。”门徒说：“我这平庸的人，又怎能慷慨地把衣给您这个杰出的人穿呢？”戎夷听了，叹息说：“唉，我的主张看来不能实现了！”说完，便把身上的衣脱下来给门徒穿。到了半夜，自己冻死了，却救活了这个门徒。

说戎夷能够把一个时代治理好，那还没有证明；但是，他那有利于人类的思想，算是达到不能再高的程度了！

Text 6 轻视图书阅览，如果说不是愚昧无知，起码也是一种目光短浅的表现。学校是教人读书教人成才的地方。学校永远和书籍在一起。学校而无书籍，就不能称为真正的学校。教人会读书，首先要有书，自然课本也是书籍，而且是学生必须首先读好学好的书籍。但是正像教育界前辈叶圣陶说的：“教材无非是例子”，又如维持一个人生命必需的最低限度的营养一样，有它虽不至于饥饿而死，但决不能保障其健壮地成长。农民都知道：庄稼要好，水足肥保。课外读物就是学生成长的“水”与“肥”，岂可一日短缺！

Text 7 从1980年到1990年，中国国民生产总值年均增长8.9%。80年代中国的面貌有了很大的变化，政局稳定，经济繁荣，民族和睦团结，人民安居乐业。

进入90年代以后，我们力争以更高的速度发展经济，加快改革开放的步伐。在邓小平今年初讲话的精神鼓舞下，中国的改革开放和经济建设进入了一个新的发展阶段。据预测，今年全年的国民生产总值增长将达到甚至超过9%。中国的经济生机勃勃，前景光明。

中国改革开放不是权宜之计，而是百年大计。因为它顺应了民心，使人民受益，得到人民的支持，一定能取得胜利。

Text 8 有一次，中国驻纽约总领事卸任回国，纽约市商会为总领事设宴饯行，美国汉学家夏得应约担任了那位总领事临别致辞的翻译。

但是当这位总领事起立致辞时，夏得教授却为之大起恐慌了，因为总领事说的是满口的福州话，他一句都听不懂。事到临头，他当然不能向商会当局临时解释中国方言太多，他根本听不懂福州话。在一瞬间的局促不安之后，教授情急生智，他竭力做出洗耳恭听的样子，不仅默不做声，而且大做其笔记。当领事演说完毕之后，只见夏氏从容起立，用英语为领事重新演说一番。一开头他便说，我这次离纽约返国，内心充满了一喜一悲的矛盾。喜的是即将重返祖国与亲朋久别重聚，悲的是与纽约诸新交旧识从此握别……夏氏如此这般发挥了一气，说的情文并茂。当她的“翻译”演说结束的时候，全场热情洋溢，掌声如雷。
