Teaching Aims.

Step 1. Revision
1) Check the writing.
2) Dictate some new words
Step 2. Listening and reading
Listen to the tape and then ask the students to read the text aloud with correct pronunciation and intonation.
Step 3 Language points:

a) more than =over
b) more than=not only
e.g. He is more than our teacher, he is also our friend.

Your walking is more than slow. What’s wrong?
The number of the students in our school is more than doubled.
The result is more than we can imagine.
★ More than one + 谓语动词用单数
More than one house was burnt down in the big fire.
So far, more than one student has asked me for help in English.
More than one film has been shown to popularize the knowledge of prevention of SARS.
3) majority 集体名词，用作主语时，谓语动词单复数均可．
The majority of people was/were in favor of the plan.
The majority seem to prefer peace to war.
Maybe yours is the best, but you should consider the majority opinions.
反义词：minority
4).in total=in all=altogether
5).the number of; a number of
6).except, except for, except that, except when.
except =not including.
I’ve written all the letters except the one to my husband.
All went to the playground except Tom.
except for.
a)强调整体上的一个概念．
Your article is well written except for some spelling
except that there are some spelling mistakes.
We go outing every except when it is raining.
I know him well except that I don’t know his address.
b)放在句首代替except.
Except for him, all are successful.
7) sth of one’s own
a car/ house/ pen of my own
8) develop into 发展成…
He has developed into a strong leader.
The old village has now developed into a large modern city.
9). With 结构在句子中作定语、状语。
Where was it that you met the girl with a basket on her back?
The old man sat there with his dog playing beside him.
With my key lost, I can’t enter my room.
With so much work to do, I can’t go with you.
The students slept with all the window open.
10).knowledge
He is a man with little knowledge.
可用a, some, no, a good 等修饰，表示对…的掌握
It’s a must to have a knowledge of English in international trade.
My knowledge of maths is poor.
If you want to be a politician, you should have some knowledge of politics.
Step 3. Homework
1). Finish off the exercises in Page 92 and 93.
2) preview the next lesson.
