Analysis of “I Ask My Mother to Sing”
----In the use of Formalism
Formalism is an approach that emphasizes literary form and the study of devices within the text. This eay is going to analyze a poem “I Ask My Mother to Sing” from the perspective of Formalism. This poem is mainly about the author’s and his mother’s and grandmother’s nostalgia.I will analyze its structure, imagery and symbols in the following paragraphs. This poem is made up of four stanzas. From the title, we know that the author asked his mother to sing, and then in the first stanzas, his mother and grandmother sang for him.The content of the song is also very important, so in the following second and third stanzas, the author described the typical places of China. The first sentence of second stanzas, the author mentioned that he had never been to China, but at the beginning of third stanzas, the author said “but I love to hear it sung”.It indicates that although he had never been to China, the tie between him and China is deep-rooted.And it seems that there is something carried by blood, no matter where is he, or whether he have been to China or not, it can be felt. The fourth stanza is the shortest with only two sentences, showing that both of the women became sad and began to cry.In the poem, the author made full use of imagery. In the first stanza, the author used “accordion”, showing the happy memory before father died.“Mother and daughter sing like young girls” indicated the Chinese song reminded them of their younger time in China. In the second stanza, the author listed three typical places of China, the rain and picnicker. As for the third stanza, the description of waterlilies is very impreive, “they over turn, spilling water into water, then rock back, and fill with more.” It makes us see the vivid dynamic frames. Here the author used metaphor, the waterlilies and Kuen Ming Lake stand for the beautiful memories, which is joyful and also sorrowful. As for the symbols, the most important symbol is water, which has been mentioned in the text for six times.Actually the rain, the tears and the Lake are also water but in different forms.Water is the symbol for the unconsciousne. Here the author indicated that although author’s family were not in China then, they felt they are greatly linked to China. The feeling of homesickne or nostalgia overflowed unconsciously.Whether they liked it or not, they are deeply tied with China in an unknown way.In the last stanza, the mother and grandmother cried but kept singing. It seems that the mother and grandmother were just like the waterlilies, “spilling water into water but fill with more”.It is interesting that it seems the condition of my family resembles the content of the song.Maybe it indicates that the Chinese root is deeply rooted. In a word, this poem is mainly about memories, including those of the narrator, her mother, and her grandmother. The author described the places of interest of China as well as the waterlilies.Generally, the tone of the poem is sad, and it mainly showed the author’s never ending nostalgia.
