This is exactly a wretched story, in which every character is extremely wreched.In this story the main character, Armand, aumes that it is his wife's(Desiree)fault that their young son has Negroid features.He aumes this because when he first met and fell in love with her, she had no real knowledge about who her parents were and where she came from.Feeling shame and disillusion about his marriage, Armand forces his wife and son away from his home and life forever.But by the end of the story, he stumbles upon a family secret which makes him, not Desiree, directly responsible for the Negroid features of his son.He discovers that his own mother belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery.This bit of irony in the end is cleverly done and establishes Kate Chopin's final point-that the only difference that exist between white and black, is in the imagination of a society that exclusively decides its own racial purity!Born in a wrong times, pitiful Desiree married such a cruel racial discrimination.Marriage is the second life of a woman.Her first life has been abandoned by her parents, while her second life was deserted by her husband whom she deeply falls in love with.Her baby is innocent.He is deserted by his father just because the color of his skin.The baby must be very beautiful.The pretty and innocent baby, however, have to leave the world after brought here only 100 days.What a pity!Armand, the most powerful and cruel man, is the most wretched one.He push his happine away only for the ridiculous “belief”.He is the victim of the times.While I am looking back on the whole story, I feel more sorry for Armand rather than curse him.That is to say, what we should curse is not the character Armand but the times of slavery.
