Three Questions
Of Study
Francis Bacon may be famous for the aphorisms from his eays. Those are the author's reflections and comments. In his remarkable eay Of Study, he mentioned several aspects of reading. After reading this article, I want to ask myself three questions, that is “ How to read? How to read effectively? How to transfer what we read into our characters?”In this eay, Bacon said“ Read not to contradict and confute;nor to believe and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider.” I think in this world there is no absolute right. As Schopenhauer, a philosopher, said that not all the claic books need to be read intensively. The reader must be clear whether the ideas of the books suit for his own characters. And the final goal of reading, I think, instead of readily believing something, is to find their style and to think independently. That leaves the decision entirely in the hands of the others.Second, how to read effectively. The author insisted “some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested;other to be really wholly, with diligence and attention." Well, I aumed that the writer's idea was that we should adapt our reading methods according to different kinds of books.I totally agree on it because our life is limited and a person can't finish all the books.Besides, reading too much will make to feel goofy because we are always living under other's thoughts.Just as food can nourish our body, but if you take too much, it will harm your intestines and stomach, even your health.Third, how to transfer. It's a really tough work. And I have not a completed idea about this yet.Perhaps, we need constantly review our experience in order to improve ourselves and find our own style.
