Self-reflection eay Through one semester studying on managing communication in organisation, I gradually have a clear understanding ofmy communication style and skills.According to mysurvey result, in cooperation aspect, I cooperatedwell with my teammate. We divided whole project into four part and took charge for each part separately.I do actively participate in team meetings and was a good listener when we have brainstorming. However, I failed to come up with some innovative ideas sometimes. In research and idea generation aspect, I read case and searched for information carefully. But It was quite difficult for me tocombined theory with case study at the initial stage of group project which lead to a poor idea generation. For example, I was confused when we analysed the leadership and conflict management style of director in case study. Then after several team meetings, we shared our own views about challenges in group project and had a mutual understanding of methods to overcome difficulties. In preparation aspect, I prepared a lot for my own part. However, we failed to practice more as a whole team which result in some deficiencies in presentation. As for attitude aspect, I highly respect my teammates and team project.I wasa positive and supportive team worker in our group.I rated myself with 4.1(out of 5), which was below than cla average 4.6.I think I still have some defects in communication styles.Besides, the comments from my tutor was that I was anactivelistener but need to expre more.Through analysis before, I consider my communication style as submiive communication style.Submiive communication style refers to that others’ interests and concerns are more important than mine(Anderson & Martin, 1995).In team project, I usually played a role as a listener rather than an innovator.I generally compliance with other team members ideas or suggestions.Sometimes I was afraid to state my own point of view and not honest enough when there existed some diensions. This communication style hindered a better outcome of group project. The reason why I have this communication style is that I still lack trust to our team members.I was afraid that they may have some prejudice when I directly raised questions.According to five dysfunctions of a team, absence of trust was a fundamental problem in a team(Lencioni, 2002).If trust is low, then task conflict transfers to relationship conflict which result in low team performance(Simons & Peterson, 2000).Therefore, in my opinion, my engagement in team project greatly reduced by low trust and submiive communication style.SID: 470144446 The other problem in our team project is that we lack roles like monitor evaluator and completer finisher to ensure tasks accomplished correctly and on time.In my opinion, this is the major problems of our team.As mentioned before, we divided team project in four parts and accomplished separately. However, we didn’t have a leader to monitor entire proce which result in a delay of our progre. We finished our project by the sequence that decided before, therefore one team member delayed resulted in a retard in whole project. Moreover, due to time limitation, we only have one day to edit and revise our report.Because of lacking completer finisher and having a sense social loafing, revise proce was quite inefficiency.Team members rarely pointed out others’defects so there were some problems in our report.According to Belbin team roles, a succeful team need to contain 9 team roles: plant, resource investigator, co-ordinator, monitor evaluator, shaper, team worker, implementer, completer finisher, and specialist.A monitor evaluator could see all options and judge accurately. And a completer finisher could search out errors and achieve perfect(Belbin, 2012).In our group project, we have set a goal, but we didn’t decide a specific plan to finish it.And due to writing our own part, report content and logic were quite discordance.A monitor evaluator could effectively modify these problems. With providing specific timeline of overall proce and constantly monitoring progre of project, the discordance of content and project delay could be eliminated. Moreover, with the help of completer finisher, some minor problems could be corrected, and the team performance could be better. However, there were some limitations of this theory when it applied to ours group.Belbin team theory state that most people have two or three roles in a team(Belbin, 2012).These roles are based on personality and personal ability of team members. In our group, there were only four team members, some of us were not suitable to become a leader in a team and it is hard for us to apply all 9 roles in our team. Therefore, from my point of view, this theory is more appropriate to large and well-structured team.Base on analysis before and studying in this semester, I come up with some recommendations to myself to improve my communication skills.First, changing my communication style to aertive communication.I used to be a listener in team meeting however I found that an active listener should not only listen but also give feedbacks.Positive listening in team should contain asking appropriate questions and giving feedback of feelings(Beebe and Masterson, 1986).In order to become an aertive communicator, I should find a balance between my and others’ interests, concerns, and agenda. When communicating, I should expre my idea and interest clearly and confidently.I used to devalue myself and SID: 470144446 afraid to expre my opinion when I communicate.I need to avoid these thoughts in the future.I should ask questions directly and honestly. As an aertive communicator, people should treat others with respect and be responsible for their own thoughts and actions.Having open mind and being responsive to others are also important(Anderson & Martin, 1995).In future communication, I should no longer just being a listener.I need togive my own point of view and state it clearly.Second, I need to create “smart” goals.“smart” goals refer to specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely goals(Locke & Latham, 1984).In our group project, lacking specific plan could be considered as one of main reasons that reduced team effectivene.Without specific plan, the proce cannot develop as expected and communication could be hindered due to unfamiliar with others’ work. Therefore, creating a “smart” goals is quite important to improve team effectivene and team performance.I should state clearly about what I want to achieve and list specific plan to achieve this goal. The goal should be measurable.Clear quantitative or qualitative indicators should be mentioned in goal.Furthermore, goals should be achievable based on giving resources and constraints. Moreover, actions should always consist with goals.Last but not least, strict time bound should be defined in goals.Time line should includewhen each step achieved and when whole projectaccomplished(Locke & Latham, 1984).Therefore, based on “smart” goals, I should discu a specific goal with my team members at the initial stage of group project. We need to identify whether the goal is measurable and achievable. Then we need to come up with specific actions and timelines to achieve desired goal.Third, applying Belbin team roles in team project. As mentioned before, due to miing monitor evaluator and completer finisher, our team performancegreatly reduced. So, it is eential to apply Belbin team roles in group project.According to this theory, each team member should have a clear understanding about their personality and ability. After forming a team, team members should take their own team roles. As for me, I would like have monitor evaluator and completer finisher team roles in next group project. As a monitor evaluator, I should have a critical understanding of overall project.I need to constantly check progre and give feedbacks to my team members.Besides, I should comply with the strict timeline of goals to ensure project finished as expected. And as a completer finisher, I need to revise whole project and identify problems. In this way, our team could achieve a better performance.SID: 470144446 In conclusion, I am a good listener and a supportive team worker in team project. However, I still have some insufficiencies in communication styles and skills.I used to have submiive communication style in group meeting. And our team lack some team roles to achieve desired goals. To overcome these problems, I need to convert communication style to aertive way.Furthermore, I need to create “smart” goals and apply Belbin team roles theory in team project.Through these improvement, the communication skills could be greatly improved, and team performance could be increased as well.SID: 470144446 Reference: Anderson, C.M., & Martin, M.M.(1995).Communication motives of aertive and responsive communicators.Communication Research Reports, 12(2),
