The Merchant of Venice I just see the film of The Merchant of Venice in the beginning of this term for the reason that our team has to make a presentation about the play of Shakespeare.I haven’t read the book as I have no patience to read the English version.But I remember I have learned the climax part in my Chinese cla in my junior school.This is Shakespeare's early comedy.It is Baanio who wants to marry the wealthy heire.But he has spent out his fortune.So he turns to his good friend Antonio for help.As Antonio no cash on hand at that time, he has to ask the moneylender Shylock who hates Antonio so much to lend him three thousand ducats.Shylock agrees to do so, only that Antonio should return in three months.Otherwise Antonio should let Shylock cut of a pound of flesh.In the climax part of the play, the chief actre Portia disguises herself as a young doctor of law to defend Antonio.In the end Shylock is severely punished.Of course the play has happy endings.This play reflects Shakespeare's optimism.This play shows the true friendship between Antonio and Baanio.And it also shows intelligence of the chief actre.In the play Shylock is a cruel and selfish moneylender.All of people may think Shylock is a bad guy.However after I finish the movie, I feel much sympathy with Shylock.I do not say he is kind person.I just think he is just a poor father that his daughter runs away with a man carrying all his fortune.Shylock is a Jew.At that time the Jews is a persecuted religion.They are always suffered unfair treatment.I know in the European countries history, the Jews are being slaughter periodically.Even in the most powerful and liberal city state Venice in 16th century, there still exists intolerance of Jews.It is said that the Jews are forbidden to own property.Shylock hates Antonio because Antonio always disgusts him as Shylock is a Jew.So Shylock wants to make revenge.I am so moved by his words that he talks the unfair law to his nations.He says that his nations people all has eyes, hands, organs, perception, affections and paions.They eat the same food, hurt with the same weapons ,suffered with the same disease and heal with the same medicine.They also feel hot in summer and cold in winter just like the Christians.I am so wander why they can treat Jews in that way.I think I will read the English version to learn more about this play in winter vacation.
