The Analysis of American Holidays
under the Influence of Western Culture
For constitutional reasons, the United States does not have national holidays in the sense that most other nations do, i.e.days on which all businees are closed by law and employees have a day off.The U.S.federal government has constitutional jurisdiction to establish holidays for itself, for certain federally chartered and regulated businees(such as federal banks), and for Washington, D.C.;otherwise, constitutional authority to create public holidays is a power reserved to the states. Most states also allow local jurisdictions to establish their own local holidays. As a result, holidays are not governed at the federal level as each state has jurisdiction over its holidays.Although holidays are declared as official, the government, whether it be federal, state, or local, cannot dictate to businees when they need to officially close.Holidays fell into three groups. In first group, holidays are established to celebrate religious festivals, such as: Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day.Halloween or All Hallows' Evening also known as All Hallows' Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day.It initiates the triduum of Hallowmas, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints(hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers.Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.Because many Western Christian denominations encourage, although no longer require, abstinence from meat on All Hallows' Eve, the tradition of eating certain vegetarian foods for this vigil day developed, including the consumption of apples, colcannon, cider, potato pancakes, and soul cakes. The second group of holidays are established to commemorate great men or historical events. For example: Martin Luther King Jr' s Birthday ,Washington's Birthday, Independence Day ,Columbus Day.Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United Statescommemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.Independence Day is commonly aociated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.Independence Day is the National Day of the United States. The last group of holidays are about environmental protection such as: Arbor Day, Earth Day.Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.
