Ford Motor began a manufacturing revolution with its ma production aembly lines in the early 1900s.Now the company has firmly established its status as one of the world’s largest makers of cars and trucks.It makes vehicles with such brands as Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury.Among its biggest succees are the redesigned Ford Mustang and F-Series pickup.Ford owns a 33% stake in Mazda and also controls the Land Rover, Jaguar, and Volvo nameplates through Premier Automotive Group.The Ford family owns about 40% of the company’s voting stock.So far General Motors(GM)has steered around competitors to remain the world’ s No.1 maker of cars and trucks, with brands such as Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn.GM also produces cars through its Holden, Opel, and Vauxhall units.GM also has stakes in Suzuki Motor, and GM Daewoo Auto & Technology.Subsidiary GMAC provides financing.GM has been selling off non-core aets including stakes in Fiat and Fuji Heavy Industries(Subaru), as well as its locomotive manufacturing busine.Like its US counterparts Ford Motor and Chrysler, GM is in the midst of restructuring its sprawling North American operations.Wal-Mart Stores is an irresistible(or at least unavoidable)retail force that has yet to meet any immovable objects.Bigger than Europe’s Carrefour, Tesco, and Metro AG combined, it is the world’s No.1 retailer, with about 6,775 stores, including some 1,075 discount stores, 2,250 combination discount and grocery stores, and 580 warehouse stores(SAM’S CLUB).About 60% of its stores are in the US, but Wal-Mart is expanding internationally;it is the No.1 retailer in Canada and Mexico.It owns a majority stake in Japanese retailer SEIYU.Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe, and South America.Founder Sam Walton’s heirs own about 40% of Wal-Mart.Kmart is a chain of department stores in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam.The chain merged with Sears in 2005, creating the Sears Holdings Corporation.Kmart also exists in Australia and New Zealand as Kmart Australia, although it now shares no current relation with the American stores except in name after US equity in the Australian busine was purchased in the late 1970s.
