Three paions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.These paions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.I have sought for it, because it relieves loneline—that terrible loneline in which one shivering consciousne looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifele aby.I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what –at last—I have found.With equal paion I have sought knowledge.I have wished to understand the hearts of men.I have wished to know why the stars shine.And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux.A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were poible, led upward toward the heavens.But always pity brought me back to earth.Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart.Children in famine, victims tortured by oppreors, helple old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneline, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be.I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, ad I too suffer.This has been my life.I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.我为什么而活？--罗素

三种单纯而强烈的激情支配了我的一生：对爱情的渴望，对知识的追求，对人类苦难的深切同情。这些激情象阵阵飓风，反复无常地将我卷袭东西，带向深痛的海洋，推临绝望的深渊。

我爱花，所以也爱养花。(1)我可还没成为养花专家，因为没有工夫去作研究与试验。我只把养花当作生活中的一种乐趣，花开得大小好坏都不计较，只要花开，我就高兴。在我的小院中；到夏天，满是花草，小猫儿们只好上房去玩耍，(2)地上没有它们的运动场。

花虽多，但无奇花异草。珍贵的花草不易养活，看着一棵好花生病欲死是件难过的事。我不愿时时落泪。北京的气候，对养花来说，不算很好。冬天冷，春天多风，夏天不是干旱就是大雨倾盆，秋天最好，可是忽然会闹霜冻，在这种气候里，想把南方的花养活，我还没有那么大的本事。因此，我只养些好种易活、自己会奋斗的花草。（3）

不过，尽管花草自己会奋斗，(4)我若置之不理，任其自生自灭，(5)它们多数还是会死了的。我得天天照管它们，像好朋友似的关切它们。

On Growing Flowers Lao She Translated by Zhang Peiji

I love flowers and hence have taken to growing them.But, short of time to do re-search and experiment in flower cultivation, I am no gardener at all.I merely take flower cultivation as a joy of life.I really don't care whether or not my flowers will put forth plump and nice looking blooms.I'11 be delighted.as long as they can bloom.In Summer, flowers and plants growing in luxuriance in my small courtyard will leave little open space as a play ground for the little cats, so they have to sport about in our rooms instead.I grow many flowers, but none of them are exotic or rare ones.It is difficult to grow a precious flower species.And I feel bad to see a good flower dying of illne.I don't want often to shed tears over that.But Beijing' s climate is more or le unfit for the growing flowers.Freezing in winter, windy in spring, and either too dry or too often visited by rain-storms in summer.While autumn is the best of all, it is often plagued by a sudden frost.In a climate like tbis, it is far beyond my capacity to grow precious flowers of southern breed.Therefore, I only grow flowers and plants that are hardy and enjoy a high survival rate.Although such flowers are able to weather through by themselves, I, however, never ignore them or abandon them to their own fate, for otherwise most of them will probably end up dead.I have to care for them every day as if they were my close friends.注释：

老舍的《养花》于1956年10月21日发表在《文汇报》上。老舍爱花，写出了养花的乐趣，视花儿为自己生活的一部分，人花合一。文章短小简练，朴素隽永。

1）“所以也爱养花，”译为hence have taken to growing theTn，其中动词短语to take to的意思是“开始喜欢”。此句也可译为are therefore fond of growing flowers。

2）“只好上房去玩耍”译为they have to sport about in our roorns instead，其中动词短语to sport about的意思是“嬉戏”（to play and jump about happily）。

3）“我只养些好种易活、自己会奋斗的花草，”译时稍作灵活处理：1 on1y grow f1owers and p1ants that ar。hardy and enjoy a high survival rate，其中用enjoy a high survival rate（成活率高）表达“好种易活”用hardy（耐寒、耐劳、能吃苦）表达“会奋斗的”。

4）“自己会奋斗”译为able to weather through by themselves，其中gh词短语to weaiher through的意思是“对付困难”、“度过风暴”等。此句也可译为ab1e to carry on the struggle fOr existence by themse1ves，但 用字太大、大多。

5）“任其自生自灭”不宜按字面直译，现意译为abandon thenl to their own fate。

敬爱的党组织：

经过一段时期的初级党校学习，我的心境自然澎湃而又亢奋。其实，无论是谁，这种难得的熏陶刚过，思想上和认识上都会大有一吐为快的强烈之欲望。这对深刻理解中国***始终是一个最先进的党、最伟大的党，始终是实践―三个代表‖重要思想的 楷模，也始终是勤奋学习、善于思考、解放思想、与时俱进、勇于实践、锐意创新的模范等等，以及正确选择一个人的人生观、价值观和世界观，都具有非常积极的意义。以下是我的心得体会：

首先，通过学习，我对我们的党有了更加深入的理解：中国***是中国工人阶级的先锋队，是中国各族人民利益的忠实代表，是中国事业的领导核心。中国***有它的阶级性，人民性，先进性。中国工人阶级是中国***的阶级基础，工人阶级政党是工人阶级的先锋队，工人阶级的先进性决定了党的先进性。而工人阶级之所以具有先进性是因为它代表了先进生产力和生产关系，具有高度组织性、纪律性，赋予革命的坚定性、彻底性。知识分子是工人阶级的重要组成部分，随着社会的发展，信息技术等越来越发达，因此工人阶级政党的先进性必须随着时代的发展不断具有新的内涵、新的标准和新的特征，做到与时俱进。党的先进性还体现在将―三个代表‖写入了新的党章。―三个代表‖重要思想对党的先进性作了富有时代特征的界定，具体地、明确地揭示出党的先进性的实质和内涵，深化了我们对党的先进性的认识和理解。

其次，通过学习我进一步端正了自己的入党动机。入党动机是指一个人要求入党的内在原因和真实目的，是推动人们争取入党的一种精神力量。真正正确的入党动机应该是能始终将人民的利益放在首位，为了最终实现****而奋斗终生。我要在自己的工作和生活中不断地实践，不断地确立正确的入党动机。一个人在组织上的入党一生只有一次，而思想上的入党是一生一世的，所以，在今后的人生道路上，必须坚定信念，用理论知识来武装自己，不断地深化自己的行动。

再次，我懂得了入党的过程是一个漫长而艰辛的过程，是一个充满考验的过程，不是你随便想怎么样就怎么样，要时时刻刻用党员的标准来规范自己。听了几位优秀学生党员的入党经历，学到了我们不仅要在组织上积极要求入党。把党和人民放在第一位，用自己的行动来展现一位入党积极分子的作风，时时刻刻，用党的标准提醒自己，什么要积极主动的去做，什么要积极同违背党标准的做斗争。入党的过程，便是不断完善自己的过程，便是升华自己的过程。

当然，我也进一步树立正确的社会主义荣辱观。通过学习，我深刻地体会到社会主义荣辱观是构建社会主义和谐社会一个带有根本性的问题，体现了在科学发展观的指导下，将依法治国与以德治国有机结合起来，将经济建设、政治建设、文化建设、社会建设融为一体的我国社会主义现代化建设总体布局。荣辱观是由世界观、人生观、价值观所决定的。不同的荣辱观，是不同的世界、人生观、价值观的反映。荣辱观渗透在整个社会的生活之中，不仅影响着社会的风气，体现着社会的价值导向，标志着社会的文明程度，而且对社会的经济发展由巨大的反作用。

通过这次的学习, 我不仅加深了对党的基本知识的了解，也更加明确了入党动机，优秀党员决不是套在自己头上用于炫耀的光环，而是我们应该努力学习，不断进取所应该达到的目标，组织上的入党一生一次，思想上的入党一生一世。在学习当中，最让我感动的是中国***的优良传统和作风。党的宗旨是全心全意为人民服务,而党的优良传统和作风恰恰印证了这一点。看着那些面对党旗宣誓的***员,我感动了,我感到了作为***员的骄傲,也更加坚定自己的人生信念：我也一定要成为一名***员。我要时刻谨记党的教诲，时刻以党员的行为准则来约束自己, 在以后的生活、工作中，自觉的加强自己，争取得到更大的提高。
