A Glimpse of Moment in Peking After finishing a book of nearly one thousand pages, I am kind of feeling a sense of accomplishment.Never have I really put my heart to read such a long English original before.Moment in Peking, depicting the story of a group of people, a moment in old, agele Peking, a story written by the hands of a prominent writer as well as by the finger of time itself. It touches me greatly largely because of the special setting on which the story happened, in which the alternative of life and death permeated. The writer, LinYutan, was born in the town of Banzi in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province in southeastern China. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English, which can also be felt in this book, made him become one of the most influenced writers of his generation.Moment in Peking was originally written in English, latter translated into Chinese by others, and has been televised into two versions. We can find great change between the novel and its televised versions.TV play usually tends to present more romantic stories and intricate relationships, which are contrast to what things actually happened in the novel.I am shocked to learn that Mulan had been keeping the love to Lifu secret, never clearly known by others even Lifu;while in teleplay, these young people were just trapped in complicated relationships, the so-called love triangle. The characters introduced in the novel just like a mirror of its time, their personality and characteristics were all influenced by the particular age they lived.Although I can’t figure out what specific character it indicates of a female figure like Mulan, who was brought up by a Taoist, to deeply keep her love inside and yield to the parents-arranged marriage to Sunya. However, that does not matter much to what I want to convey in the following. It is a story of our own Chinese people, of our own life and death, happened after the Manchu Dynasty collapsed, a time when China was in a state of extreme social instability, heavy war stomp and brutal foreign aggreion. This was a time when our land was tramped, when our people were suffering and when our great motherland was striving. It provides with a new visual angle to view our age of that special time through the vividly-described English writing, as well as an effective way to introduce Chinese society to Westerners, which was the contribution of Lin Yutang’s to bridge the cultural gap between the East and the West.A special time as it was, not only did it tell the life of several large families in Peking, but also described genuine historical events which were indispensable to the destiny of characters in this book;thus we have to contemplate on life and death, on nationalism by ourselves.Since this novel was written between 1938 and 1939 when there was no unified phonetic system of Chinese language could be employed, the proper nouns appeared in this novel were all spelled according to the Wade-Giles Spelling System, so I will apply the original proper nouns in this reaction paper. The full-length novel is composed of three parts. In the first part, Book One writes about the daughters of a Taoist;in the second part, Book Two represents the tragedy in the Garden;in the last part, Book Three implies with the song of autumn.Things are changing. That’s probably what touches me most. The story begins with the lost of a child, Yao Mulan, ten years old, in 1900, during the Yao’s journey fleeing from Peking because of the Boxers trouble. Finally, Mulan returned to her parents safely with the help of Mr.Tseng, thus setting the stage of the ties between the Yao’s family and the Tseng’s family. The Yao’s was a rich family dealing with busine while the Tseng’s was a family of officials.Mr.Yao, probably is the character that Lin Yutang most approved and extolled in this novel.这是本人在阅读了林语堂英语版的京华烟云之后写的读后感,字数3000多字,是本人自认为写得最好的一篇文章。现传网络上,希望对你们有参考作用,切记全部复制过去哦!本人拥有英语专业八级的证书,所以还是有参考作用的,不是很好,但也不会太差哦,如果有什么错别字或者个别语法错误还请海涵哈!O(∩_∩)O~ He was a Taoist, who was latter suddenly enlightened in his thirties and converted from a reckle youth into a Taoist whose Taoism deeply influenced his children and one of his sons-in-law, Lifu, Mochow’s husband. These were his remarkable words: “when you yourself are right, nothing that happens to you can ever be wrong”;“men contrive, but the gods decide”.His Taoist disposition could be seem through his calmne when the family had decided to flee from Peking to Hangchow in 1900.Even through his shedding no tears when Mrs.Yao died.He explained, “Life and death and growth and decay are the very law of nature.Luck and adversity is but the natural consequences of each one’s personal character, and there is no avoiding them.So although parting in life or through death is sad according to normal human sentiments, I wish you to take these things and accept them as part of the Way.” He had a habit of starting a period of physical regimen, in order to reach a state of excellent well-being;his body would glow with the blood coursing his legs, a sweet exquisite sensation, and then he would lie down and sleep a perfect sound sleep. He was indifferent to money, totally leaving the busine to Mr.Feng, his brother-in-law.He was also a progreive: he read many new books and left his daughters’ feet unbound;when the Revolution came, he was one of the first to cut his queue. When he had fulfilled his last duty towards his family on earth, that is, arranged his youngest son Afei’s marriage with Paofen, he decided to leave his families and not return until after ten years. He said he was going out and tried to find himself;to find oneself was to find the Way and to find the Way was to find oneself. He did return after ten years, with the long white beard and bushy white eyebrows and the powerful eyes.At that time, he was already 72 years old.During that ten years, he had been to the Miaofeng Mountain, Wutai Mountain in Shanxi, Hua Mountain, Mount Omei in Szechuen, went as far south as Mount Tientai and the Pootoo Islands. He died naturally in 1936, at the age of 85.Compared with the old generation of his time, Mr.Yao was the one who had the longest life, and the only one who died naturally. His wife, Mrs.Yao, would constantly shriek in dreams and become afraid of the dark since Silverscreen had hanged herself, for Mrs.Yao sent servants to grab away her son with Tijen’s, the Yao’s eldest son. Before long, her spoiled son, Tijen died in his thirties accidently after falling down from a horse. After that, Mrs.Yao was getting very weak, became extremely kind as well as religious, even couldn’t speech for a long time until not long before her doom. She died at her fifties.Another large family in this story is the News, also a family of officials, who latter declined in the storm of Revolution of 1911.The News then retired to live in Tientsin. At the age of sixty, old Mr.New suddenly abandoned his wife, took away most of his money and openly come back to live with his concubine.Mrs.New was an arrogant and mighty woman in this family. No wonder that Mr.New couldn’t bear her any more, and left her alone. Two years later, old Mrs.New committed suicide by drinking foreign Lysol, a poor, deserted woman living alone in a small Tientsin alley house.By contrast to Mr.Yao, Mr.Tseng was rather conservative. He was grief-stricken not only for the sake of his own, but also for the troubles of the country, the feeling that the old Chinese world he knew was slipping from beneath his feet.Neither would he approve to cut the queues nor would he favor the women’s frequent outgoing. He would constantly repel almost every foreign thing. He called the modern times “an age without king, without father, and without teacher”—the three symbols of authority and order in human life.Paradoxically, when he was suffering from the “sugar-urine disease”, he had to yield to try the Western medicine called insulin, but his pride was threatened with foreign conquest. In the end, his urine trouble got worse again and died roughly at his fifties or sixties. In his last words to his families, he exhorted them to remember the principle of “men attending to the outside and women attending to the inside”.After all, he was a righteous man and true, self-controlled by discipline and culture. For me, it is far beyond appropriate to just claify him as one who represents the old and backward things. At that violently-changing time, things were changing: the new-born things were striving for development while the old things were striving for survival.Old Mr.Tseng, just typified a cla of people who were well brought up and who had strictly observed a social and cultural system which had been long-established and universally-accepted.Once the world they had well known and had completely depended on was challenged and decayed, they would suddenly feel abandoned and fear and at a lo, the innocent people who were left wandering at an age of rapid change. This is a character more of a sigh of times, but a victim or derelict of that Chinese age.Mr.Tseng’s wife, Mrs.Tseng, died of cancer, at the age of fifty-nine, on March11, 1928.These were the masters and mistrees of the old generation of the three large families in Moment in Peking. This is a book depicting the stories of many people, their life and death, their love and hate, their partings and reunions. The younger generation, the Yao’s Tijen, Mulan, Mochow and Afei, the Tseng’s three sons,Pinya, Chinya and Sunya, the New’s Huaiyu, Tungyu, Suyun and Taiyun, as well as Mrs.Kung’s Lifu, Huan-erh, the Feng’s Redjade, Chenma’s son Chen San, the Chen’s Sutan, Sutung, etc.who were brought to be whatever, their life were all marked with the stamp of the age. Here, I would like to quote Mr.Yao’s words to further explain my views. When Mulan said to her father that he didn’t believe in immortality, Mr.Yao replied, “I do, my child.I am immortal through you and your sister and Afei and all the children born of my children.I am living all over again in you, as you are living all over again in Atung and Amei. There is no death. You cannot defeat nature.Life goes on forever.” So it is the same with the reincarnation of earthly life!

We grow to marry, to bear children, and to die.The downfall of an old generation will always be complement with a new generation.Mulan was married to Sunya, borne two girls and a son;Mochow was married to Lifu, borne three sons;Afei married Paofen;Chen San married Huan-erh, at the end of this novel, they all had been in their middle ages. The once younger generation had grown up to shoulder the responsibility of a family, to act the roles as parents, and to locate themselves properly in society. They were all influenced by their upbringing and the age they lived, especially in a special time of social instability and nationwide turbulence. But things are changing.Born in affluent families, the younger generation had been used to living a cozy and luxurious life: surrounding by a bunch of servants, holding numerous parties, taking trips to visit any scenic spot at their random, grand wedding with cases of invaluable troueau. However, during the course of life procees, everyone, either the rich or the poor, be it a master or a servant, had to accept his or her own destiny and face to what had happened.Pinya, the eldest son of the Tsengs, died in his early twenties, for infecting some incurable disease. His virgin wife, Mannia had to be a widow all her life;unfortunately, she finally hanged herself in her fifties, when these cruel Japanese invaders raided into the house. These brutish pygmies even made fun of her dead Tijen, a typical rich kid, died out of expect.Mulan, the well-educated and fair lady, had to hide her love in her heart and unresistingly accept what had been arranged for her.Suyun, an unwelcomed, even an unscrupulous girl, could never get along with most of the young people of her generation;she even had been involved in drugs smuggling;however, she finally died bravely and gloriously for refusing to be a Japanese spy. This was a time when the Chinese people are suffering and striving: the Boxers’ Movement in 1900, the Revolution of 1911 lead by Sun Yatsen, the Youth Movement on May4, 1919, the northern advance to wipe out warlords in 1926 and the nationwide resistance to Japanese invasion since the Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937.The destiny of the characters was all closely related to these historical events. When the Sino-Japanese War broke out, most of them had to flee around. The families of Mr.Feng’s, and Poya’s stayed in Peking, which was soon under the control of Japanese;Afei and Paofen, Chinya and his wife, Dimfragrance left Peking for Shanghai;Asuan, Mannia’s adopted son, had set out with his families and Mannia to his wife’s native village. Not long before the war broke out, Mochow and Lifu had settled down at Soochow while Mulan and Sunya moved to live in Hangchow. As the situation got worse, Mulan and Sunya joined the stream of refugees fleeing inland.Mochow and Lifu had left for Chungking, a response to the Chinese Government’s demanding its officials not connected with military defense to move their families up to the Yangtse. Not a kind of cozy life any more. These were a generation of fighting for survival, fighting for the freedom of the country, fighting with their children!Lifu had been cynical towards politics and the current situation of the nation. He had constantly published his critical articles on newspaper.Taiyun, a paionate new girl, had been put into prison for several times.Together with Chen San and Huan-erh, the three of them had gone to south to join in the work of Kuomingtang when the Cantonese National Army started its northern expedition. When the Sino-Japanese War broke out, they went to northwest to fight against Japanese invaders.Aman, Mulan’s eldest daughter, was shot to death in a students’ demonstration against the Tuan’s government, a warlord-controlled government.Kuochang, Huaiyu’s eldest son, who had been sacrificed in a sporadic fighting between Japanese soldiers and the remnants of Peace Preservation Corps, his last words were to ask his Aunt Taiyun to comfort his mother and kill his father, a notorious traitor.Mulan’s only son, Atung and Lifu’s eldest son, Hsiaofu were also enlisted in the army to fight against Japanese invaders.Moment in Peking, is not only a book of stories, it also reveals the true eence of life.Through the whole story, we have seen many life and death: the vanishing of old generation and the appearing of new generation.Human life goes on in circles of youth, maturity, and decay. The old leaves dropped one by one, and the new buds sprang up, vigorous and hopeful. As long as human races exist, the circle of life won’t cease. But it is not simply a story of human life;these people were living in an age of turmoil, living in a country of incompletene.Nobody could separate his life with the whole society, with the overall situation. When a country was humiliated, when the sovereignty and territorial integrity were threatened, when the blood of our people were shed, we would not tolerate. When the refugees fled west to inland, our great soldiers went forward to the front. The soldiers’ song rose again and again: never to come back, until our hills and rivers are returned to us!It roused the heart of Mulan;it roused the heart of refugees;it roused the heart of our nation!Moment in Peking, a pry into life and death, an epic of the age and its people.
