“These are simple people, poor people.They work hard and they need to believe in something, something beautiful.They are seeking for something more perfect than what they have.” this is what Mathew Harrison Brandy says in the movie.Although he helps prosecute Cates, the high school science teacher who is arrested for teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, I don't think that Brandy is a bad person and I do agree with him that man must have a faith to live with.What I mean here is not only religious beliefs, like Christian, Islam, Buddhism, but also any beliefs or goals that we bear in our minds.It can be our dream to be accepted by a famous university, or our belief in the theory of evolution, or our our goal of a communist society.I call all these faith because all of them are the sweet in miserable life, the light in the dark, the motivation with which we fight, and the hope with which we try to live on.Edmond Dantès, the protagonist of The Count of Monte Cristo（《基督山伯爵》）, has been kept in jail for 14 years, during which he has almost gone mad and the only faith that makes him survive is his love for his fiancee and his father.It's faith that brings us hope.In the movie, Rachel's father is an extremely conservative and

religious preacher who believes that every word in the bible is literally true and that anybody who denies its truth will burn in hell forever.When he gives a speech at the first night of the trial, his behavior and the zeal in the crowd's eyes frighten me so much that for the first time in my life I feel the dreadful power of faith.This makes me think of a sentence in the book Red Poppies（《尘埃落定》）--why religion doesn't make us love, but make us hate.In my opinion, all kinds of religion were good at the beginning but they have changed a lot as time goes by.When they go to extremes or when they are used by some evil person, some of them may bring dreadful disasters to people.What's more, no theory is perfect.What we can do is to accept what's good in them and change what's not sound.We should learn the love and forgivene in religion just like Brady said “ God forgive his children and we, as children of God, should forgive each other”.In conclusion, all of us should have our own faith.However, we should know what's right and what's false before we make our choices because the power of faith is so strong that it can either bring us hope or disaster.
