The most prominent European enlighten ideologist of 18th century Roueau suggested that every growing young people, particularly boys should read Defoe’s masterpiece Robinson Crusoe.Brief contents and background

The author narrates Robinson’s adventures by time sequence.British youth Robinson likes voyage since his childhood, and he has three experiences of leaving home and traveling around South America. From the desperate crevices, strong-minded Crusoe lives independently for 28 years on the island and gets revelation of life.Living and working lonely on the deserted island, he creates his own farm, rears animals, and grows /produces rice and wheat.Year after year, loneline is his only companion, but he overcomes all difficulties which ordinary people can’t

manage to.The Bible becomes his spiritual pillar. With amazing willpower and stubborn labor, he builds houses, harvests grain, domesticates goats, and makes clothes from animals’ fur.He fights with wild animals and uncivilized savages who eat human flesh.Later he saves a native and calls him “Friday”, taking him as servant. With unusual perseverance and courage, he overcomes the unthinkable hardships, and with his industrious hands, he creates a home to survive.Until the 28 year an English ship arrives near the island, Crusoe helps the captain overwhelms the insurgency sailors, just then does him go back to Britain. At that time his parents are all dead, Crusoe retreats all his benefits from manors in Brazil, and gives part of his benefits to people who have helped him.Defoe’s creation of this novel was inspired by a true story. In 1704, Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk had a quarrel with his captain at sea and was abandoned by the captain on a lonely island, four years later he was rescued back to England. The author Defoe made comments on Robinson as below: his image is a man who is not satisfied with quo-status, he is brave, active, and he has the courage to pursue his dream while without any fear of difficulties, and a creator creating a new world by modern civilization.Thoughts and revelation

After reading it, there are many feelings in my mind.First of all, I

think it is not very suitable to translate the title “Robinson Crusoe” to “鲁滨孙漂流记” in Chinese. The most important experiences in Crusoe’s life were living in the deserted island for 28 years, which was none of drafting’s busine. Therefore, I think the Chinese title “鲁滨孙漂流记” is not called correctly, with some disputes with the content.I think we might as well call it “鲁滨孙历险记”, thus it can more accurately reflect his adventures. After reading this novel, I thought of Hemingway’s famous words: “A man is not made for defeat. You can destroy him, but you can never defeat him.”

In the book, the hero----Robinson’s survival on the deserted island reflects the enterprising spirit and the confidence and courage to challenge nature, and these are widely respected by people. It tells people that in difficulties we can’t lose courage.Courage and perseverance is the most valuable, without it, we shall never get rid of troubles.Daniel Defoe describes Robinson’s survival on the island, self-reliance, fighting with harsh environment with great length and moving scene, and praises people’s wisdom and good character of industriousne.Among them, the plots of setting his home, making canoe reflect that Robinson is characterized with utilization and good at discovering. The hero is intelligent, energetic;do believe “common sense” rather than destiny. In fact, the image of Robinson is a typical image of representative of British bourgeoisie of the 17th century who are advanced, adventurous and brave in exploration. It shows intense enterprising spirit and enlightenment consciousne of bourgeoisie.Writing features

The plot structure is so truly-like and natural that it falls no artificial.Daniel Defoe is particularly good at describing environment;the detail and fictional scenarios are so lifelike that they make readers feel like they are experiencing those things and thus can’t help believing they are true. His language is natural, without quotations;the story is all told by the protagonist, and it makes readers feel cordial. Its language is plain but vivid, and easy to be understood.Influence and significance

Though not very mature in art, it played a positive role to the development of English novel. Thus the novel’s hero Robinson became a famous literature image in European literature history. The novel creates a fresh artistic image of Robinson with features of new times. The gripping story, lifelike description of natural environment and plots break the ascetic, flashy, empty style of claicalism. It paves the way for British realistic enlightenment novel and becomes the first real British realism novel.Robinson Crusoe is Daniel Defoe’s masterpiece;it is a famous and

popular literary claics. It shows intense enterprising spirit and enlightenment consciousne of bourgeois. The author uses vivid details of the fictional scenes and thus makes readers feel that the story is really true.Robinson, protagonist of this novel also became a famous literature image in European literature history.Mark: AMar 29, 2011
