Brave New World
Community, identity, stability
--motto of the New World State
Startling the whole world once it came out, Brave New World succefully aroused new thinking and deep misgiving about our future. In the so-called brave new world depicted in the novel, everything has its rules.Pregnancy is forbidden.Thousands of hybrids are developed from one germ cell in specialized incubators. These hybrids are divided into castes—Alpha, Beta, Delta, Epsilon, each of which corresponds to special social function when hybrids grow up.People’s vocations have been designed before they were born--Alphas, Betas are born to be leaders while Deltas and Epsilons destined to be leaded.Created by social will, everyone is an acceory of the gigantic social machine, obediently, compliantly, working and relaxing. And all of them feel unconsciously happy to accept their condition and situation thanks to the national “education”—utilization of psychological methods--hypnopaedia1 and psychoactive drugs--soma.People even succeed in avoiding aging to have full enjoyment of life. There, people are given sufficient freedom within certain limit—freedom of making sex—a perfect replacement of love.Just like what the world state’s motto indicates—community, identity, stability.Every action conducted by the government adheres to the creed. Here we have questions:
Is the world described in the novel a really ideal brave new world?
The answer is obvious—obviously no.At least no one wants to have hundreds thousands of brothers or sisters. From the discourses and performances of the characters in the book, we are able to see, in the guise of freedom hides endle void and nothingne. It seems that humans are free—they sex with different people, and feel happy every day, but actually they are not free at all. They are robbed of free love, innovation and spirits. They work like puppets and zombies. They are alive to be 1 Teaching during sleep(as by using recordings to teach a foreign language to someone who is asleep)
dead. It’s rather pathetic that one loses affection, agony and animation. What’s more pathetic, people feel at ease in such a world without any intention to make a change. Will our world become this brave new world in the future?
Actually this novel is Huxley’s peimistic prophecy of a world with no personal spirits.Everything is in order, and under control.Though some features are exaggerated for the art’s sake, we can figure out some eential information author wants to convey.First, relationship among people becomes more and more shallow. In today’s society, humanity lays too much emphasis on material things—worship of money and social status. In the proce of doing so, they give up a lot of other things which they think does no good to their reputation and poeion.Gradually they become slaves of money and are indulged in the fake paradise created by wealth. They are used to betraying others and being betrayed, using others and being used.Secondly, people tend to avoid all kinds of pain and setbacks and attach to hedonism2.No one would like to work if he/she is able to get everything without any payment, just like no one would refuse happine if they can get. However, happine and pain are sometimes similar to the two sides of a coin, which can’t be separated. If one doesn’t know what sadne is, then it’s impoible for him /her to feel happy,as is proved in the novel--people living in brave new world don’t know what true happine is.All they can do when they encounter trouble is take soma pills to forget all the anxiety.Thirdly, government controls the mind of its population.By using hypnopaedia and removing everything concerning history, the government brainwashes the people to keep them under control. They are not allowed to do rebel the social will, nor do they mean to.This part more or le is an irony of today’s society.Rather a smart way to rule the public.Dystopia
Brave New World is undoubtedly a succeful dystopia novel.Dystopia, a 2The pursuit of pleasure as a matter of ethical principle
popular theme in modernism novel, means a state in which the conditions of life are extremely bad as from deprivation, oppreion or terror.Like this book, George Orwell’s novel 1984 also centers on a dystopia, in which main characters experience a series of tortures and tried in vain to rebel against the government.Darwin, Freud and Pavlov
Huxley has great genius at both literature and science, which is fully displayed in his novel. His aumption of artificial evolution borrows Darwin’s theory;methods of brainwashing adopted by the government are a practice of Pavlov’s stimulus-reaction model and Freud’s iceberg theory. Conclusion:
It’s a profound novel of irony, containing more than what I’ve written above, and also one of the most interesting novels I’ve ever read before.
