Student working part-time

For many students, working part-time is becoming a normal part of their hectic lives, especially for college students. What they have to do is to make sure that their part-time job fits into their school schedule, studies, sports activities and family commitments.Working part-time, whether at a department store or at a fast food outlet or involving regular

babysitting can be a fulfilling experience for teenagers who are ready to take on additional commitments and responsibilities. These students would be able to reap the rewards of working by earning some pocket money. Before contemplating on taking a part-time job, a student should ae the study workload and other regular commitments to ensure that the job would not stretch him or her too far.Planning and preparing for a part-time job entail understanding the work commitments, how the additional hours of working will affect study and other family routines and whether one can adequately cope with the additional work. Many secondary and college students who work part-time negotiate with their employers to work fewer hours during their examination semester. As with all things, these students should remember that the key to fitting in part-time work with studies is balance the situation. The students should ask themselves, ‘If I work, will I still have time left for recreation? Will the job be flexible around my studies and

examination commitments?’ For these students, working part-time provides a source of personal income and therefore, a certain level of independence as well as work experience which may enhance future employment opportunities. In line with the increasing number of teenagers in schools, colleges and universities, the last decade of the 20th century saw a tremendous increase in the number of students who were both studying and working. In the 1990s, the number of working students in secondary and tertiary institutions increased by a big percentage. The way the students combined their study and work commitments depends on their age, work experience, level of study and family situations.Working students can be categorised into two groups-those who primarily identify themselves as students who work in order to pay the bills and those who are first and foremost worker who also attend college to pursue a diploma or a degree, usually in the evening.Part-time student employment has benefits;for example, an on-campus research position may spark a student’s interest in post-graduate academic programmes or provide important experience that will improve the student’s future labour market prospects.Working part-time as a student generally appears to

supplant non-productive activities such as watching television and playing computer games. On the other hand, students who work full time are more likely to drop out of school that those who do not.Because of the adverse effects of full-time jobs, thousands of these college students are likely to drop out of school and fail to receive a college degree.Working for a limited number of hours, for example, ten hours a week, appears to have

positive impact on a student’s performance while working for a significant number of hours, for example, twenty hours or more per week, is likely to have adverse consequences.
