Personal Statement

Although my major is English, I am still very interested in geography and environment.My hometown is Chaohu City and it is famous of the various nature sceneries.However, with the quick development of urbanization, this wonderful scenery has been destroyed.My hometown’s urbanization is achieved at the cost of environmental damage.As a witne of this proce, I truly feel sorry about the change of nature.Fortunately, I have learned some useful knowledge in protecting environment.Above all, I want to change this phenomenon by using this knowledge.After my graduation, I made a decision to chase after my dream----learning further for the Environmental Science.I searched the internet and finally I realized that being the student of Karen C.Seto, an aociate profeor of the Urban Environment, is a good choice.She studies the human transformation of land and the links between urbanization, global change, and sustainability.And her research focuses on four themes: 1)Characterizing urban land-use dynamics;2)Understanding the proce of urbanization;3)Examining the environmental consequences of land-use change and urban expansion;and 4)Forecasting urban growth.For me, I prefer to choose the course of Urbanization, Global change, and Sustainability.Nowadays the urbanization is the world’s tendency which is regarded as the symbol of city’s image.At the same time, it brings many problems especially in environment.Because of the booming of factory and enterprise, the heat will rise which is called “Heat Island Effect”.It also has an effect on biodiversity because lots of field is exploited.In addition, the urban population increase sharply is a big challenge to the bearing capacity of environment.However, we usually ignore the importance of harmony between the nature and human.We need to find a balance between the nature and urbanization.Therefore, this is the goal for me to choose this course.I believe that the Yale University can provide me with many advanced tools and offer me more opportunities to approach the latest technology and knowledge in environment.I want to commit myself to environmental protection.If poible, I would like to become a geographical teacher.I need transmit my thought to my students and the next generation which can awaken their awarene to focus on our environment.Eric
