Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

——the real happine in our childhood

By Scorpio, Cla Six

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is a claic American children’s novel written by Kate

Douglas Wiggin, who devoted all her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labour. She was an

American educator and author of children's stories. This book was published in 1903, which presented a story of a sunshine girl’s development physically and mentally. The story begins with the ten-year-old Rebecca, who had left the Sunnybrook Farm

where she lived for ten years for the brick house of her two aunts in Riverboro. She had to live with her aunts and study here because her single mother with a lot of children at home cannot afford to provide with her tuition.Aunt Miranda was picky and over-strict with her behavior and she was always finding fault with her.Fortunately, another aunt,Jane was not as tough as Miranda, which made Rebecca easier to get through.Rebecca had made a lot of friends and she was so charming and outgoing girl that everyone in the town wanted to stay with her.She also developed an intimate friendship with her Mr.Aladdin-the

busineman who loved kids so much.Things cleared out at last.Aunt Miranda was influenced by Rebecca’s paion and naivety, which resulted in her

bequeathing to Rebecca the brick house after her death. After finishing the book ,I fell in love with this little girl immediately.Talkative as she

is, she has a talent to make you interested in what she is saying;sometimes she can be naughty and get into trouble, but it is all due to her divine goodne, in that way people are ready to pull her through;she likes to write poems and act with her good friend-Emma, no matter how much her teacher criticized her;she is willing to help others and in return she receives a lot of help from others, which, to a degree builds her way up to succe;there is one period when she wants to draw in her home and never come back as a result of Aunt Miranda’s toughne, but it is Mr.Cobb, the man who drives her to Riverboro who

encourages her and fuels her with the pluck to face the reality… in her sky, there is only sunshine and rainbow seen from her beautiful eyes. The unpleasant experiences will be filtered automatically and the things left are accumulated collectively, which will accompany her in the rest of her life. There is no doubt that Kate Douglas Wiggin is a prominent writer of children’s novel. She can conjecture and handle well what children are thinking and I appreciate her simple but meaningful writing style. The words are easy to understand but you need to think more to grasp the deep-seated significance. But I have a

question about the title of this book. The author described mostly Rebecca’s life in Riverboro, but she applied the Sunnybrook as a part of the title.Iam quite confused with it although I know maybe there is some relation between

Sunnybrook and the sunshine character of Rebecca.Rebecca resembles one of my little sisters. She spent all her primary schooldays at my

home and at that time I had to go to a boarding junior high school. My

homesickne and envy at her staying with my parents made it easy for me to lose my temper and without question I vented my anger on her.I felt Iwas like Aunt Miranda and every timeI shouted at her because of some trivial things, I had a gratification of seeing the poor look on her face. But she still grew up in sunshine. She also had a group of friends who were always calling her to play and the moment she met me, she would grin and greet me with no hostility.Years going by, I can never forget the big smile she gave me which makes me not able to utter any word to expre my regret and guilty. And here I’d like to talk about something about real happine. In this novel, we can

feel that Rebecca lives in a world where she creates warm and pleasure using the typical thinking way of a kid, not influenced by the adult world at all.As far as I am concerned, it is mostly in your childhood that you can find your real

happine. In that precious time, you don’t have any burden and you needn’t think your future at all.You can enjoy the most love from your parents and you can play outside until dinner time. There is no envy, no appetency and no leerine stuffed in your mind, forcing you to lose your naivete for survive. When we grow up , we have to be responsible for a lot of things. You cannot just abandon them away like you did in your childhood because no one will regard you as a kid anymore and it won’t be justifiable for you to receive the help from your parents like you did in your childhood.Maybe this is the worries of growing up.Neverthele, Rebecca is grown up;my little sister is grown up;I am grown up.No

matter what happened before, we have to accept the truth that we are all adult now like our parents. The life may be full of misery, but we need to use

Rebecca’s optimism to pull through it.Let me end up with Rebecca’s words: God ble aunt Miranda;God ble the brick house that was;God ble the brick house that is to be!
