I finished the book The Red And The Black within three days.I felt confused at the first sight of the title of the book.I can’t tell the intention of the word ‘red’ and ‘black’.Then I started the reading journey out of the curiousity.What impreed me most are Julien’s relationships with Mrs.De Renal and Mathilde along his way to political achievements and high social status.I applause each single true love between anyone, especially between Julien and Mrs.De Renal.Mrs.De Renal can’t get romantic and true feelings from Mr.De Renal that should belong to husband and wife.She falls in love with Julien because she doesn’t want to deceive herself about her emotions.And for Julien, his love for Mrs.De Renal is completely true even though he hopes to get some benefits from approaching to Mrs.De Renal at first.When Julien comes to Paris he knows Mathilde.And they feel crushed on each other, they even have a baby.But Julien realizes that only Mrs.De Renal can take good care of his child after his death.Then we know that only Julien and Mrs.De Renal love each other completely.However, Mrs.De Renal paes away three days after Julien’s death.Many comments show their criticism to Julien’s behaviour.They may think that Julien is a liar both in life and love.But in my opinion, I appreciate Julien’s ambitions.As the son of a peasant, Julien receives no fair treatments from the high cla.Many ordinary young people will choose to be still ordinary till their death.But Julien is always an ambitious person.He wants to be a priest and wants to act like his hero Napoleon.Even though he resorts to wrong methods while he is chasing his goals, his determination and will should be applaused.Due to the limit of the time and society, Julien plays a negative role that is blamed by people from all levels.But people usually neglect one point where Julien shows his kindne.At the end of his whole life, he corrects his life direction and becomes a good guy.He gives up appealing and running away, instead, he learns to face the guilty.During the period of time when he stays in the prison, he feels free and innocent he has never felt before.At last, he finds his true love——Mrs.De Renal and realizes the eence of life.He faces his condemnation fully at ease.I can’t stop thinking that if Julien lives in the modern society, he won’t meet up with so many hold-ups and limits.He will become a great person with his ambitions and hard works.People nowadays have been used to living in a peaceful and easy environment.They are losing a kind of spirit, that is the willpower of chasing their dreams.I appreciate Julien, a brave young man.Back to the beginning, as to the title of the book, I have my own understandings.I think that ‘red’ represents people’s, like Julien’s, exploration of their meaning of living.And ‘black’ represents their wrong choices and directions along the way to succe.Anyway, The Red And The Black is really a great master.And I hope that I am able to read the original edition as soon as poible.
