The Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities, one is London, the other is Paris.“ It was the best of times, it was the worst of times./ It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishne./ It was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity./ It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkne./ It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair./ We had everything before us, we had nothing before us./ We were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”

There comes the start of the story.Eighteen years ago, Dr.Manette was prosecuted and sent into the Bastille by Marquis St.Evremonde for informed against their torturing a rural family.Eighteen years later , Dr.Manette was set free, with the help of his friend Jarvis Lorry, the pathetic old man finally meet his only daughter Lucie. In the trip towards new life to London, they made the first acquaintance with Charles Darnay, the French man who fell in love with Lucie later on and confe his affection and real identity to Dr.Manette.After Knowing Charles Darnay’s identity, the nephew of Marquis St.Evremonde, though got extreme shocked and sorrowful, Dr.Manette agreed their getting married out of love to his daughter. On the other side, with the social contradiction getting increasingly incisive, the French Revolution was triggered by Marquis St.Evremonde’s rolling over a rural child.Charles Darnay was caught and sent into Bastille by the angry French people on the way to rescue the butler Gabelle in Paris.Although Dr.Manette once saved him out of prison, with the litigation from servant Defarge, Charles was arrested again and sentenced to death with the letter Dr.Manette wrote to denounce the guilt of Marquis when he was prisoned. At the end of the story, Sydney Carton, a London lawyer who had been deeply in love with Lucie and looks remarkably like Charles Darnay, decided to replace Charles and die for the happine of his Love.“A tale of two cities” is one of Dickens's most important representative works. It exposes the incisive social contradiction between aristocratic stratum and Laboring people before the French Revolution, denounce the aristocratic cla’s diolute and cruelty, and exprees the sympathy for laboring people. But out of humanity, Dickens opposes to extreme violence of the revolutionary people and advocates to solve the social contradictions in rational ways. The novel does perfect in shaping three kinds of typical character. The first1

type of character is the feudal aristocracy represented by Marquis St.Evremonde, which was strictly rebuked by the author for their cruelty and diolute. The second kind of character is the revolutionary people, represented by Defarge’s wife.Indeed, the author exprees his strong sympathy with madame Defarge for the tragedy of her family, and appreciates her strong mind, intelligence and outstanding leadership before the eruption of revolution. But after the revolution broke out, the outburst of her intense anger made herself a ruthle, cruel, narrow-minded revenger. She even planned to kill the innocentLucie. At the end of the story, she died from her own gun by accident at the scuffle with Mi.Pro, Lucie’s loyal maid. From it, we can easily recognize the negative attitude of the author towards extreme violence of revolutionary people. The third type of character is the idealized figure, the model of dealing with social contradiction with philanthropism , forgivene and sensibility, including Dr.Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton.Dr.Monette was prosecuted by Marquis St.Evremonde, and once had being extremely angry to Marquis’s broking his life and family, but he put down his hatred and accept Charles Darnay , the nephew of Marquis St.Evremonde, for his daughter.Charles, the inheritor of power and estate, was shame on what his family have done.He made a decision to abandon all the things he will inherit, and atone for his family’s guilt. This two figure stand for a inversely different way from extreme violence to humanity, rationality and sensibility of the revolution. With outstanding writing techniques, this novel was regarded as a encyclopedia of the society during the French Revolution for its vivid description of people from various stratum.
