A report on A Thousand Splendid Suns
Part 1
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel written by Khaled Hoeini and it was published in America in 2007, then it became the bestseller in the U.S.and the top book in New York Times.Khaled Hoeini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965.His father is a diplomat and his mother is a teacher. In 1970, his family followed his father to Iran for work arrangement.Three years later, they came back to Kabul, which was the last stable period in Afghanistan. In 1980 Soviet invaded Afghanistan and his family moved to the U.S.Then he studied medicine in California. His first novel The Kite Runner was a hit in America in 2003.A Thousand Splendid Suns is his second novel, describing two women who struggled bitterly in Afghanistan in the time of civil war and their dreams, love, hope, and lo.Part 2
A Thousand Splendid Suns covers the touching story of two women.Mariam is a bastard of maid Nana and merchant Jalil. She lived with her mother in a small village in Herat.Jalil visited Mariam every week and told her the stories outside her village, which aroused her curiosity to go out of the village and to live with her father.Although Nana loved Mariam deeply and told her not to belive her father, she ran to her father when she was 15.On her leaving, her mother committed suicide. Her father made her marry the forty-five shoemaker, Resheed. After her first abortion, her life became miserable because of Resheed’s maltreat.Laila is the daughter of Resheed’s neighbor. When she was 14, her childhood partner’s family went to Pakistan to seek asylum. Her brother died in the war of Soviet’s invasion in Kabul. When her family were to leave, her house was destroyed and her parents both died. She was saved by Resheed, then she was pregnant. On hearing the death of Tariq, she was forced to marry Resheed and borne her daughter of Tariq.Laila and Mariam lived in the same house, but at first Mariam didn’t like Laila, for she thought Lalia take her place. After they went through much together, they begun to know each other and built a good relationship. Then Laila borne a son of Resheed. They had enough of Rasheed, they tried to flee, but failed.Later, Tariq appeared into Laila’s life, then Resheed discovered it and wanted to strangle Laila, Mariam killed Resheed to save Laila. They decided to run away again, but Mariam refused to leave and left here to take the responsibility of killing a man, then she died.Laila and Tariq begun their new life and visited the place where Mariam once lived, finding that Mariam’sfather had left a sum of money and a letter to Mariam.Laila begun to teach children.Reaction 1
I was deeply touched by the stories.I also admire the goodne of the two main characters. For example, Mariam, at first, she expected to live with her father and left her mother, but what she got was to marry Rasheed, a man who was much older than her.She didn’t resent his husband and begun to accept all.Even she received Rasheed’s maltreat, she still tried to please him.WhenLaila came, she was unhappy, but after they went through so much together, Mariam help Laila to look after her daughter and treat Laila like her real family. In the end, she committed manslaughter for protecting Laila and took the responsibility by her own.Laila was a good girl, too. After her brother died in the war, her mother broke down and did not pay attention to her at all.Although knowing that her brothers are her mother’s all, she still tried all ways to cheer her mother up.When her parents died, she was saved by Rasheed.Although she didn’t like Rasheed, she agreed to marry him and gave the birth to Tariq’s child.Reaction 2
The two protagonists had one thing in common, that is had a father they loved deeply. For Mariam, Jalil always told her stories and took her to fish.Maybe he gave Mariam hope that they can live together, so Mariam decided to run to his house, wishing they could live with him.Because some reasons, like her father was afraid of losing face or her father’s wives would accept her, her father sent her to a nightmare world. But I cannot deny her father did love her, after Mariam’s departure, he was regretful and lived miserably because of this war.He wrote a letter to Mariam to repent what he had done to his daughter and left a fortune to his loved daughter.Laila’s father never treated her like a normal girl Afghanistan. He taught her daughter what she couldn’t learn in the school. So her daughter became an independent and aertive woman.Reaction 3
This novel tells the stories of two women, but it depicts the general life of women in Afghanistan. They represent two kinds of women, Mariam was born in disgrace, which is doomed that she would not live a happy life.If her father took her back to live with him, she still would be goiped by other women, so maybe that’s why her mother always told her Jalil was a lair.Even though she wad a bastard, she still had her right to have happine. But the war and the reality destroy her family, love and dreams.Laila was born in a well-educated family, but she still could had an equal position with her brother in her mother’s mind. But there were still some people who did not think that man is superior to woman, like Laila’s father, he taught her by himself. In patriarchal society, most women were forbidden to school and more than one woman shared one husband. At last, Laila begun her new life with her loved one, so there is still hope for women who fight for their destiny.
