Moby Dick, have you heard this at once? Yes, it is a name of a whale, a huge white kind of animal.And of course, Moby Dick is widely considered to be a great American novel and a treasure of world literature, which is written in a simple structure and depends on the experience of whaling.The author of this novel is American author Herman Melville and the book was first published in 1851.In Moby Dick, it tells the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael, the narrator, and his voyage on the whaler Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab who encountered the white whale and one of whose leg was bitten off in a previous whaling.Ishmael worked as a schoolmaster, but sometimes he thought that he needed a bit of change.As he usually head for the sea when he felt a little down from life.There was something about the sea that brought back and restored his spirit, his drive in life.Maybe for this he always count on the sea.And he became a sailor at last.When Ishmael arrived in New Bedford on a cold Saturday night, he received some bad news that he had mied the last boat for Nantucket.He at last found an old, unfixed hotel to live in and where to meet a strange bedmate, Queequeg.But they got along well with each other and became good friends.They finally decided to seek work on Pequod together.Puquod started its voyage from Nantucket of the American east coast, through South Atlantic, Indian Ocean and then Pacific Ocean, on the journey;they had killed several whales and met with some boats.One of the ship’s captains tried to persuade Ahab not to take revenge, because they had encountered with the attack of Moby Dick.But Ahab’s brain was full of revenge, and he hung a doubloon on the mast as a reward for anyone who sights the whale first.At last they met with Moby Dick three times, once the storage of whale oil barrels was broken, Queequg tried his best to save them but he finally got sick.A carpenter made a pair of coffin, Queequdg miraculously survived.It was ended up with the Ahab’s death in the sea and the whale Pequod was knocked over, but the whale had disappeared.Only the sailor Ishmael survived who tell the tale of the white whale.In the tale we can find out that Ahab and Moby Dick is a pair of sharp encompaes.The captain Ahab of the whaler Pequod is a smart, determined but swellheaded, he lived on the sea for over 40 years.He had said: “Do not respect me, even if the Sun against me I will also make moves disappears.”This is a very visual expreion of the relationship between man and natural.Ahab is a normal person buthe has the virtues which others do not have that are strong toughne and do not caring for wealth or fame.In the meanwhile, we also can find the defects of him, such as craze, selfishne, self-willing and so on.From his virtues(He indeed creates a new covenant with the crew, using their blood as a baptism of sorts, and he even holds his own ma, a dark ma of courser, but still.And also he makes his ultimate goal, killing the whale, becomes everyone's goals), he almost the gods, let people believe in and excited;from his dark side, he is much closely to Moby · dick and became a demon, let a person feel disgusting and terrible.Maybe just because of this, Captain Ahab can be the strong enough person who has the responsibility to complete the miion of killing the white whale.In the tale, the whaler Pequod stands for us human society, it is an epitome of that age.The proce of Captain Ahab to destroy the white whale is one of human conquest of natural which is concentrated, and it is just one of the million times.Moby Dick represents the nature and of course it is a very outstanding representative.It is a symbol of natural power and reflects natural strength.Nature is rich and generous, human beings depend on it.He is the treasure-house for humans to survive;he offers us food and clothing.If human beings lost him, we will no longer is exist.Our nature is also chary, he never offer us anything.All the things we got from him are extorted even plundered to be realized.So we can not make clear that the nature is our benefactor or our enemy.But just to the whale, nature and human, only one can survive.Because the behavior of human with the whale only embodies cruel side, as return, which the whale can give human is sinister revenge.Can human and nature is friends or enemy? The dead Ahab and Moby Dick cannot save the problem.This is a question which is without answer.How human face to nature should be a permanent topic, maybe the key is human should remain their own.The relationship between man and nature depends on us, what we can do is not to overcome nature.Learn to known more about nature and make full use of natural resource.To consider all aspects of Moby Dick, as students in the threshold of the society, what Melville wants to tell us about human beings is: firstly, pursue what is right and reject what is wrong;secondly, man can observe and even manipulate nature in a prudent way, but he cannot influence and overcome nature at its source.
