Thoughts about A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishne, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkne, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.--quoted from the original work About the historical background and content

A Tale of Two Cities by British author Charles Dickens is a description of the French revolution, it’s indeed a milestone historical novel, the two cities refer to Paris and London. This novel is one of the most important among the masterpieces of Dickens. The motivation of writing which is a strong desire to use the past to satirize the present, to make the British leader learn a leon from the French revolution historical experience, to ring an alarm to the noblee. It was wrote in 1859,when conflicts between the rulers and the maes are sharp and fierce--There exists hidden trouble in the dominate of English government where corruption outnumbered upright, where darkne closed over twilight. The situation was very much alike that in French revolution, so dickens intend to wake up the dominators and save the society.Starting from this purpose, what was profoundly revealed was the scene before the French revolution—the deeply sharpened the social contradictions, the noble cla's diolute brutality, and most notably the miserable sufferings of the working-cla people. It was pointed out in the novel that, patience of the people is limited and gone are the days when the vulnerable groups kept silent in face of violence and invasion;a succeful government is to win the heart of her people, not simply conquer and dominate, otherwise they will fight and the fighting is just.in the work, dickens has described the spectacular scene of heroes uprising in the Bastille, fully showcased the great strength of the maes. The author stood on the humanitarian standpoint, unfavorably attacked the cruel tyranny which, from all aspects, oppreed the people;meanwhile he was also against the revolutionary people being extremely violent

But a tale of two cities also aroused huge controversy--in dickens' writing, the out of control stage of the revolution turned into a huge disaster, dickens criticized the revolutionary people for their blind slaughters, the brutal oppreion of aristocratic society in hatred , they

themselves have become a deformity and twisted social cla, with nothing but hatred and reverence in heart.I myself also have a doubt here—had there not been the violent maacre, maybe things wouldn’t go that me;but where could those disadvantaged find a seemingly reasonable way to rescue themselves and change the dark side of society? where could they go in that non-direction era?

About the language and style

Dickens is all the time famous as a criticism writer, humor and irony are typical features of his works, and it’s no exception in A tale of two cities—he commonly used gimmick and

exaggerated character images where human nature is prominent;sarcasm was properly

employed to expre him diatisfaction of the British rulers in that society;in the meantime of course detailed analysis of the inner world of the heroes highlighted every character, managing to add more realism to the novel and leading the readers to endle aftertastes.Since the story was born in 1859, I certainly made out some signs of evolvement of English in it, the usage of numbers, the way of mentioning a certain time for example and, maybe it’s dickens’s personal style, unavoidably, the book reads a little wordy.modern English pay more attention to simplicity I think.About the main characters

There are three kind of characters shaped in the novel.Marquis St.Evremonde and his brother are a representative of the feudal barons, they

believe in it that “the only unshakable philosophy is oppreive person”—this is also where the author expreed his difficult-to-suppre indignity.the Evremonde brothers kill a whole household just for temporary fun, send the young and upright doctor manette to prison via illegal means, and make off with maive crimes—just because they belong in the noble cla. There always need such kind of person in the world, so the revolutionary people has some target to shot and some goal to achieve.but for desperadoes like them, where are we to find the so-called justice which might as well die away?

The Defarges is the second kind—the revolutionary maes.Their image was somewhat

distorted in that they are sometimes so out of control and even become blind and planle I think. For example, there was the wife of drfarge, Diana, who was born in being insulted.persecuted by farmers, she was born with deadly hatred to the feudal barons, so the author showed sympathy to her misery.before and shortly after the revolution broke out ,the author expreed his admire and respect to the woman, for her strong will, excellent talents, special organization, and leadership skills;however, when the revolution furthered and eventually got out of control, he put out an offbeat, starting depict her as a cold, fierce, narrow avenger. This wave of emotion became strongest when the story came to the point where the defarge wife went to the doctor’s for innocent Lucy and little Lucy, we can see her personality has already begun to be distorted here, and then she was represented as a totally bloodthirsty maniac. Finally, the author let her shot by the gun held in her own hand, thus making it clear the negative attitude he held to such kind of revolution.I can just say they are poor.both

materially and mentally.if it hadn’t been for the unfair treatment they received, I believe there won’t exist so many sorrowful events—the poor are supposed to be innocent and pure, though once pushed, they might don’t know what had been hidden in their weak body. The third type is the idealized images, the author give birth to them out of a preference forhumanitarian in resolving social contradictions, he would love to see hatred overcame by love.these characters include the manettes, Jarvis Lorry and Carlton, etc.the one whose home was destroyed and who was once pushed to a hopele situation by the marquis brother was doctor

manette, but the one who forgave them in order to save his daughter's love, was also doctor manette.Dyer is a naphew of the marquis brother, but in him naturally grew a feel of justice and the most admirable point in him is that he realized what evil things his family had done and condemned the crimes of the family, at the same time abandoning all his title and property, determined to atone for one's crime on his own. These two characters impreed me most, for they represented twp claes: doctor manette is shaped as a noble victim of tyranny, in him the precious quality of tolerance is never to be wiped out, which is invaluable for a stable society and also a troublous country. The other is a heir to the marquis, who was supposed to be claiming numerous fortune and incomparable social status. It’s no exaggeration to say that the era was lucky to have a just guy like dyer.Among the idealized ones there are his wife lucy and daughter little Lucy. Thanks to the the link of love, they form a happy family which is filled with mutual understanding and feelings of harmony. This is obviously created by the author from the rational thinking and humanitarian position, dickens extended his disgusted feeling for a violent revolution and the opposite way of resolving social contradictions, we can say, is to his like.Any society will inevitably have social contradictions, but one way to see whether the ruler is succeful is to look at the solution they choose. And of course there might be uprising in any society, one way to see whether the revolutionary people do this right is to look at the approach they adopt—to fight violence with force, can you say it’s a wise choice? A tale of two cities have its difference from general historical novel, all of its characters and the main plot is fictional, out of the author’s imagine though based on real historical events--the French revolution as its broad real background.the fictional character doctor manette’s

experience is given priority to be depicted, in the meantime it is used as clues to develop the story. In the story, unjust verdict, love and revenge are three independent and interrelated storyline.Dickens made the stories intertwined, the circumstances are complex, and the plot intricate. The author also applied some excellent writing techniques to make the novel complete and the structure rigor, winding plots nervous and dramatic, showing great artistic skills and his incomparable Humanistic Connotations.A tale of two cities has a style which is solemn, depreed, full of unhappine, and unavoidably lack a sense of humor just like the early works of charles dickens.About the charm of claics

I have to say I am submerged in the novel while reading it, the deep insight into human nature and social revolution is only to be seen in masterpieces like A tale of two cities.Ironically had it not been for the request of our teachers few of us young people wound choose to have the inner communication with great writers like dickens—and they are also thinkers I think. We don’t lack those superficial and so-called literal works to kill time but, if we regard those as snacks, the claics will be main foods and full of nutrition we need. Many may say that they can’t make sense of the claics—well it doesn’t matter, the original meaning of then is to guide, help you think deep, look further r, and find the direction of your own life.A tale of two cities is like that.
