A Reading Report of Oliver Twist
Charles John Huffman Dickens(pronounced February 1812 – 9 June 1870)was the most popular British novelist of the Victorian era, and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature's most iconic characters. Many of his novels, with their recurrent concern for social reform, first appeared in magazines in serialized form, a popular format at the time.Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serializations, Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next installment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. His work has been praised for its mastery of prose and unique personalities by writers such as George Giing and G.K.Chesterton, though others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, criticized him for sentimentality and implausibility. One of Dickens most enduring popular stories is《Oliver Twist》, it is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century.Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship confronted by the dispoeed and those of the outside of toilet society.Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there as was the norm at the time for pauper children, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official or Adel. The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore.Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor – Mrs.Brownlow, but the mysterious Monks get the gang to kidnap the boy again.Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has shown some redeeming
qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention. The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who have hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice.Accusations were made that the book glamorized crime but Dickens wisely disaociated himself from criminal romances. His achievement was in fact in presenting the underworld and problems of poverty to the well-off in a way rarely attempted previously. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, while reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver;I was shocked by his sufferings.I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill.To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodne eventually conquered a devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end.One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs.Maylie and Rose and began a new life.He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his leons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppreive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodne.I think it is the most crucial information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodne could conquer every difficulty. For me, the nature of goodne is one of the most neceary characters for a person.Goodne is to humans what water is to fish.He who is without goodne is an utterly worthle person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, „the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose;he who is with goodne undoubtedly is a happy and useful person.People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do well to both the people he has helped and himself. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodne in humanity. They look down on people's honesty and kindne, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted.As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while
emotions and morality is nihilist. If they cannot get profit from showing their „kindne', they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest. In the novel, though the young Oliver again and again fell for conspiracies of those hideous thieves, who tried to torture Oliver‟s body and poisoned Oliver‟s heart intensely, he always lived on and tried hard to seek for his own life. Then I realized what supported him all through were actually beliefs. In most cases, what you believe is what you‟ll become.Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you commit to doing, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds. You control your beliefs and that is how you ultimately control your life. It‟s all dictated by your attitude.Charles Dickens said: “Love makes the world go around.” These immortal words have inspired and will keep on inspiring us to chant the melody of love and to say the prayer of care forevermore.Let us, therefore, enjoy life and treat other people lovingly. These principles are the roots and foundations of beliefs supporting this article and our miion together.Reading Report
