Despairing Courage
The last time I saw the movie, I was pondering on the silly question as whether it was valuable to save one at the sacriface of more or not. This time, still shocked by the acting of Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, I’m more touched by their “despairing courage” under the“unspeakable horror.”Matt Damon is really a good actor. When his continuing laughing and narrating suddenly change into stillne, I feel my heart’s chord is tightened.I can’t help but marvel at his acting.Tom Hanks, as Captain Miller also breathes life into this character. The last scene of the battle, in which Miller leans there, covered all over with wounds and cuts, and keeps firing towards the enemy tank mechanically lingers long in my heart. The last moment before the final
battle, what we see from these soldiers are real people with real hopes and fears. They try tom smoke, recite lyric, listen to music and even joke around sex.(maybe Frued is right about his libido theory)Those frightened men, in front of the crushing forces, knowing what they are heading for, are extemely helple. This is quite natural, for the instinct of human is however, to run away from the danger.Unlike those traditional heroes full of valor, what we see are cowards living in them. They are afraid. While at the same time, their despairing courage overtakes their cowardice. At least, no one draws back. It’s this despairing courage that enables a man to behave like a man in face of danger, to aert his dignity and heroism.Miller, when the solitary and heavily wounded man keeps firing, he knows he’s fighting a losing battle. In this
desperate situation, he still strives against it even if the the tank will crush him. This despairing courage is what moves me most. We, living in the peaceful time, are in sharp contrast with these real men.I feel guilty for myself. Not only because of the lack of confidence, but for the feeling that the courage is draining away from me.The paion and ambition in the first yaer of my university are nowhere to be found. That cowardly “I” always casts a backward glance at the time when life was innocent and carefree. But the worls devoid of security is not at all rosy. It’s a battle, brutal and fierce. This conjures me up what Hemingway said, the man who has also experienced real war: a man can be destroyed but not defeated.Wounded but strong, that’s what we should be.
