Jiangsu University of Science and Technology(JUST)is a higher education university featuring engineering subjects and of distinct characteristics constructed with the joint effort of both Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Education, is one of the key universities of Jiangsu Province and empowered to grant doctor’s degree.JUST sticks to serve shipping industry and national defense industry, and gradually developed into a multidisciplinary comprehensive university.Jiangsu University of Science and Technology is located in Zhenjiang City, the famous historical and cultural city enjoying beautiful landscape at the south bank of Changjiang Rive, dates back to year 1933 when it was known as Shanghai Dagong Private Vocational School, originally established at the bank of Huangpu River.JUST was succeively renamed several times in history, namely Shanghai Mechatronics Industrial School, Shanghai Shipbuilding Industrial School, Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Technical School(moved to Zhenjiang in 1970), in 1978 the school upgraded to be Zhenjiang Shipbuilding College and renamed Eastern China Shipbuilding Institute in 1993.With the merging of Jiangsu Jianghai Trade School in 1999 and Silkworm Industry Institute of CAAS in 2000, it’s then given the current name of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology in 2004.In December 2006, JUST paed undergraduate education evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education with excellent scores.Currently, JUST has four campus areas, including eastern, southern, western and Zhangjiagang campus areas, wherein southern campus area is an independent college – Nanxu College, and Beijing Research Institute, Shanghai Research Institute, Zhejiang Research Institute and Shanghai Office.It covers total area over 2500 Mu, total fixed aets valued at 860 million Yuan, in which 179 million Yuan is for teaching & research instruments and equipment.It has 1.39 million books and over 500,000 kinds of electronic books in library storage.JUST currently comprises 13 colleges, 48 undergraduate majors and orientations, one doctor's degree authorization center, 27 master's degree authorization centers, 8 engineering masters training fields, one agriculture promotion master’s degree training field, one state-level characteristic major, one key major constructed by National Defense Science and Industry Committee, one major of provincial brand, one major to be constructed as provincial brand, three provincial characteristic majors, two majors to be constructed as provincial characteristic, one National Key Discipline Construction Spot of Jiangsu Province, five provincial key disciplinary areas, three provincial or ministerial key labs, one provincial public technology service platform, 27 teaching labs(centers), two provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, as well as three spots to be constructed as provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers.JUST recruits students from 31 provinces(municipalities and autonomous regions)acro the country as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.At present, JUST has over 20,000 students, of whom are 1700 post graduates(incl.those of specialized degree)and 18000 undergraduates.The PLA has set up an office in JUST for reserve officer selection and training, and presently JUST has over 500 national defense students.At present, JUST has total 1800 teaching staff members including over 1000 full-time teachers, above 100 profeors and more than 300 aociate profeors.JUST has always attached great importance to scientific research and formed the scientific research pattern incorporating application research, technical innovation and high-tech fruits popularization.JUST has succeively undertaken a series of high-level research topics including state 863 high-tech projects, state natural science fund, state social science fund and national defense and war industry projects.In 2006, JUST was awarded the Armament Scientific Research
& Production License by the Commiion of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, which greatly expands the space of development of war industry scientific research of JUST.In recent three years,JUST has altogether undertaken 1474 scientific research projects, of which 30 are of state level, 94 are of provincial(ministerial)or higher level, and acquired 242 million Yuan for scientific research outlay(fruit transformation expense excluded).JUST has published more than 4000 articles in domestic or international academic journals or conferences, applied for 119 patents, of which 62 are invention patents, and obtained 31 provincial(ministerial)or higher level scientific research awards.JUST manages and publishes many academic publications including Journal of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology(Natural Science Edition), Journal of JUST(Social Science Edition), Chinese Silkworm Industry and Science of Silkworm etc.JUST has been striving to accelerate system reform, widen running channels, and actively conducting international educational and scientific exchange and cooperation.JUST has succeively established partnership with navy political department, CSSC, CSIC, CSI, CAAS, etc., and conducted scientific research and education cooperation with Ruia, Ukraine, U.S., France, Australia, India and Japan, etc., and constituted long-term partnership with a batch of famous enterprises such as Jiangnan Shipyard Co., Ltd., etc.A cooperative development committee involving over 100 units was set up in JUST.In addition, many enterprises or institutes such as Lowe’s, TSUNEISHI, CSIC, GSIC and KSEC, etc.set up over 20 scholarships in JUST, with annual amount totaling above 13 million Yuan.JUST has made significant achievements in both reform and development.JUST has been honored as Jiangsu Provincial Civilized Unit for 16 consecutive years, as National Advanced Unit for Undergraduates’ Social Practices for succeive 15 years, Model Unit in University Spirit of Jiangsu Province, Jiangsu Provincial Civilized University, Jiangsu Provincial Safe & Civilized Campus, Jiangsu Provincial Garden Unit, National Excellent University of Implementing School Physical Education Statutes, National Model Employees’ Home etc.Looking back to the over 70 years’ history, JUST has achieved excellent results in running university and formed the spirit of diligence, precisene, solidarity and innovation with its unswerving perseverance.In the new century, JUST will carry forward the spirit of Soul of Ship to deepen reform, exploration and innovation abiding by the motto of “devote to study and morality, study for ambition and practice”, and march forward to the goal of a multidisciplinary comprehensive university of nationwide fame and international significance.
