A Tale of Two Cities is a masterpiece written by Charles Dickens.The book that I read has 428 pages and was published by the Tsinghua University Pre in 2009.It costs 39 Yuan.I chose this book to read because I admire the author, Charles Dickens.He created vast collection of characters in his vivid novels.He focus was always on the individual rather than on abstract theories.Thus I could read the story with fewer difficulties.Charles Dickens was an excellent novelist.It was the quality of his writing that makes him popular with readers even today.A Tale of Two Cities is a sad and touching story.It took place in the London and Paris during French Revolution.Doctor Manette has been put into prison for 18 years as a result of his efforts of exposing the Evremonde family’s evil.However, for the sake of his daughter’s happine, he agreed his daughter Lucie to marry his enemy’s son---Charles Darnay.Innocent Darnay condemned wickedne of his family and gave up the Evremonde title as well as all the property.Neverthele due to he’s family background, he was put into prison in French by the outrageous people in French Revolution.A young lawyer named Sydney Carton fell in love with Lucie.He decided to die for Darnay for the sake of Lucie’s happine.The family of1
Manette finally escaped back to England safely while Carton departed to them for ever.Sydney Carton was my favorite character in this book.He was the person whose words were sharp but heart was kind.I was sure that he loved Lucie no le than Charles.Thought he had confronted his love to Lucie, after Lucie and Darnay’s wedding, he chose not to disturb her happine.When Darnay was sentenced to death, Sydney Carton tried his best to rescue Darnay at the expense of his own life.I was deeply touched by this tragic ending.After all, few people could do that as him.Doctor Manette was a just and respectful man.When he witneed the terrible crime of the Evremonde family, he felt it was his duty to inform the government minister, which resulted in his longtime imprisonment.18 years later, thought he knew Charles Darnay was his enemy’s son, he gave up revenge and accepted the marriage because he loved daughter and wanted her to be happy.Madame Defarge was totally opposite to Doctor Manette.Her family was ruined by the Evremonde family when she was a little girl, thus she didn’t let go any chances to revenge Darnay, even thought Darnay had nothing to do with those wickedne.Grudge had already taken charge of her mind.She even wanted to hurt Darnay’s innocent wife Lucie and their child.To forgive or not, it is a question.Madame Defarge and Doctor Manette, both of them suffered from brutal persecution.The former chose to forgive because of love while the later never gave up her revenge until she was killed.I sometimes aumed that women were more sensitive than men, so it is harder for women to abandon grudge.If I were one of them, I would probably never forgive but I would never hurt someone innocent.It was really ashamed that I couldn’t bring myself to do as Doctor Manette.A Tale of Two Cities was an excellent story.Once you begin to read it, you would be absorbed in it.Well organized plot, vivid description, especially the love between characters would inspire your desire to finish reading this book.
