Book report of pride and prejudice
李晓鹏
‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in poeion of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’This is the first sentence of Pride and prejudice, a love novel, which contains one of the most cherished and claical love stories in English literature.Jane Austen, the author of pride and prejudice, is the unique writer of England between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, I think. The first sentence of pride and prejudice implies the themes, or key words: love, marriage, money.Every one has his or her opinion of these three words.Jane Austen exprees hers in pride and prejudice: love is the only basis of marriage but it’s stupid to ignore the role of money in the marriage, as well. The news that a rich young gentleman called Charles Bingley has rented the manor of Netherfield Park causes intensive reactions in the nearby village of Bongbourn, especially in the Bennets, who have five unmarried daughters—Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia, from oldest to youngest.Mr.Bennet has paid a visit to Mr.Bingley without inform Mrs.Bennet and Mi Bennets. As for Mrs.Bennet, her five daughters’ marriages are her life career. Here is an opportunity for Mrs.Bennet to help his daughters to make a friend
with Mrs.Bingley.Mr.Bennet take his five daughters to attend a big ball, where Bingley and his close friend Darcy are also there.Bingley falls in love with Jane at first sight, and spends much of the evening dancing with her, while his fried Darcy is le interested with dancing and refuses to dance with Elizabeth ,which makes everyone view him as a pride and arrogant guy.Maybe Elizabeth’s prejudice against Dacry has existed at this moment. However, Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth’s charm and intelligence, gradually in the following social activities.Jane is invited to Bingley’s mansion. On her journey to the house she is caught in a downpour and catches ill, forcing her to stay ant Netherfield for several days.Elizabeth walks through muddy fields and arrives with a spattered dre to bingley’s mansion to attend Jane. The snobbish Mi bingley, Charles Bingley’s sister, laugh at Elizabeth, because of her higher status.Neverthele, her jealousy boosts when she notices that darcy is paying quite a lot of attention to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth and Jane return home, they find Mr.Collins visiting their family, who is a young but pompous fool, but will inherit Mr.Bennet’s property.Shortly after his arrival, he makes a proposal to Elizabeth. She turned him down, hurting his pride.Meanwhile, the Bennet girls have become friendly with militia officers stationed in a nearby town.Wickham is a handsome young soldier who is friendly
with Elizabeth and tells her how Darcy cruelly cheated him out of an inheritance. At the beginning of winter, the Bingleys and Darcy leave Netherfield and return to London, much to Jane’s disappointment. And Collins has married Charlotte, Elizabeth’s best friend.Jane goes to London in the hope of a Bingley’s visit. But the results go contrary to her expectations that Mi Bingley treats her rudely and Bingley fails to visit her at all. That spring, Elizabeth visits charlotte, who live near the home of Mr.Collins’ patron Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who is also Darcy’s aunt.Darcy calls on Catherine and encounters Elizabeth, and Darcy has paid many visits to Collins’s home. One day, he makes a shocking proposal to Elizabeth, but she quickly refuses.Elizabeth still considers him arrogant and pride. And her prejudice against him is more stubborn.Darcy leaves her and shortly delivered a long letter to Elizabeth,he admits that he urged Bingley to distance himself from Jane ,but claims that he did so only because he thought their romance was not serious. As for Wickham, he explains to Elizabeth that the young solider is a liar and the real cause of disagreement between Wckham and him is that Wickham attempted to elope with his young sister, Georgianna Darcy, only fifteen years old. This letter makes Elizabeth reevaluate Darcy. She returns home treat Wickham coldly. The militia is leaving town, which makes the younger Bennets crazy and nervous. The summer comes and Elizabeth begins a trip and the trip takes her to the neighborhood of Pemperley, Darcy’s estate. When she is sure that darcy is not at his estate, Elizabeth decided to visit the splendid building and grouds.Suddenly, Darcy arrives and behave very friendly to her.Making no attention of his proposal, he introduces his young sister to Elizabeth and invites Elizabeth to his estate. However, a letter came that Lydia has eloped with Wickham and the two is nowhere to be found, which suggests that they may be living together out of wedlock.Mr.bennet and Mr.Gardiner go off to find them, but soon Mr.Bennet returns home empty-hand.Just all hope seems lost , a letter comes from Mr.gardiner saying that the couple has been found and that Wickham has agreed to marry Lydia. But Elizabeth learns that it is only because of Darcy’s help.Wickham and Lydia return to Longbourn where Mr.Bennet treats them coldly.Soon Bingley and Darcy also returned there, and Dingley proposes to Jane and she accepts, and Darcy makes no mention of his desire to marry Elizabeth.Meanwhile, Lady Catherine de Bourgh pays a visit to Longbourn. She corners Elizabeth and forces her to promise that she will never marry Darcy.Of course, Elizabeth will not promise anything against her own happine.A little later, Darcy and Elizabeth go out walking together and he tells her that his feelings have never changed at al since the spring’s proposal. She tenderly accepts his proposal finally and both Jane and Elizabeth find their own happine.Surely Elizabeth and Darcy are the novel’s protagonists.Elizabeth is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters.I admire her actually, and to tell the truth I hope I can have a girlfriend just like Elizabeth. However, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often make her astray.Darcy , a young handsome young gentleman whose status is higher than Elizabeth, tends to look down upon others including Elizabeth at first, which leads to Elizabeth’s prejudice against him.But his honesty, generosity and kindne to help others is uncomparable advantages to Wickham.Surely enough, pride and prejudice shows the power of love and happine to overcome cla or status boundaries and prejudices.Jane Austen is a real great writer, which describes what is love and how people love carefully.I learn from this claical novel that love can be captured only by getting rid of pride and prejudice in your heart.Very good!
Pride and Prejudice is also one of my favorite novels.I really cannot relate this author, a young lady who never gets married all through her short life, to the sophistication she displays in writing this novel. And the theme of this novel still applies to the modern society.Pride and prejudice is everywhere in the world, and it seems not that easy to get rid of.
