Reflection upon the Declaration of Independence
Abstract: The Declaration of Independence represents the heartfelt wishes of the whole nation of American people.The strong desire for free from the yoke of the Great Britain and truths ‘that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happine’ are fully expreed in it.It is a beacon of light which leads the American people to take a bold step of taking back their sovereignty.Personally, it explicitly shows the world of their firm decision and the significance of its powerful influence cannot be replaced by that of any other kind of declaration.It’s a typical political statement of American style.My purpose to write this eay is mainly on the literary aspects and taking a close thinking on its enlightenment on human civilization.Key words: Equal;Life;Liberty;sovereignty;civilization
The first several paragraphs’ reading of it immediately captured my heart, and I couldn’t tear myself away from it.To be frank, I did have trouble understanding it well not only because of its numerous new words but also the sentence structure and some terminology with capital letters.At the beginning, the penetrating analysis of the principles of foundation for a new government is clearly and thoroughly presented.Therefore, it naturally
touches on the reason of American’s independence.The plights Americans suffered under the rule of Great Britain were just like a hell for them.Nearly thirty crimes committed by the King against the colonies are listed in this document.No doubt to say that the parallelism is perfectly used which strengthen the momentum.For instance, ‘he has refused…/he has forbidden…/he has called…/he has diolved…/’, ‘for protecting…/for cutting off…/for depriving…/for transporting…/’ and ‘he has plundered our Seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our Towns, and destroyed the Lives of our People.’ It is undeniable that this parallelism makes the author’s intention stand out and arouses people’s emotion from the bottom of their heart by recalling the dilemma they had encountered.This perfect use of parallelism reminds me of another similar eay.In the Speech on Hitler’s Invasion of the U.S.S.R made by Winston S.Churchill, he also used parallelism in his declaration to convince the ma to fight against Nazi regime.For example, ‘we shall fight him by land, we shall fight him by sea, we shall fight him in the air’ and ‘I see the Ruian soldier…/I see them guarding…/I see the ten thousand…/I see advancing upon…/’.Comparing one with the other, they share the common similarity.Both of them use telling and compelling evidence to appeal to people to face up to the tyranny and dictatorship.Not only enchanted by the words but also by the thoughts they convey.‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,’ it tells us that the Founder denied the hierarchical views harbored by people who claim that some people deserve preferential treatment because they are superior to others.Instead, the Founder believed that we all have equal natural rights.They are not given to us by the government;however, we are born with them.Therefore, we should all be treated the same and behave properly.Those officials should not abuse their power which is given by people.And their sons should feel ashamed if they have a sense of elitism and thus walk in the street like a rogue.We should be compatible with the increasingly civilized society rather than in breach of the moral standards and legal regulations.‘That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happine.’ Simple things seem unattainable;when attained, people feel sublime.However, these simple rights of Americans had been deprived for so many years.People all around the world might have the same feeling of invasion as they had.But the truth is, whether you like it or not, the invasion always exists somewhere.Isn’t that ridiculous? Since we human being know the truth, why should we manage to plunder what does not belong to us.Life, liberty and the pursuit of happine are the most mundane affairs.Wouldn’t that be wonderful if we develop activities in the circle of our owns.The writing and signing the Declaration and Independence simply made the revolt official.It was intended to give the American people a few good reasons for independence and to gain support from potential European allies.It was an overnight sensation which lit up the whole land of America as well as the world.It was the embodiment of the voice of heart of American people.The government is established by the people, for the people and to the benefit of people.Any dictatorship or tyranny will be overturned.As a Chinese saying goes, ‘The same knife cuts bread and fingers.’ We human beings always have a persistent conviction of fighting for freedom.The Declaration and Independence gives us every reason to do so.
