Our Changing Way of Living With the Times:Initiative vs.Convenience

by Yuan Yongxiang

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,The topic of my speech today is: Our Changing Way of Living with the Times: Initiative vs.Convenience.Pneumonia, a common but deadly disease,(had)almost killed me when I was three years old.But luckily, at that time, an old herbalist doctor just lived next door.My parents told me that during the time I was sick, the softhearted old man would come by every day and check whether I felt a little better or not.He even patiently persuaded me into drinking the bitter herbal soup. Thanks to his everlasting caring, finally I recovered, and got the chance of standing [to stand] here today.I still remember his four procedures of traditional diagnosis: observing, [listenning and] smelling, consulting and pulse-taking [palpating].His gentle and graceful skill is like an art, conserved in my memory, inspiring me to step into the mysterious medical kingdom.Time files.Graduated [After graduating] form high school, I chose Stomatology as my major in college.Even though I’ve heard about Western Medicine’s dependence on modern technology, I was still amazed by what I saw in the hospital.CT, MRI, X-Ray, I believe you’ve heard about those ”big names”, but what about PET, P-E-T? It’s not [an] adorable animal. And of course it’s not Public English Test. It’s Positron Emiion Tomography.Well, generally speaking, PET is the technique which can tell you precisely the location of the smallest tumor. But ironically, sometimes after spending more than 8000 RMB for this test, the patient eventually finds out he is incurable. However, my greatest astonishment came form an American TV series named Dr.House, in which the doctor would offer the patient a list of examination[s] whenever a new patient came without even meeting them in person. This set me thinking.Looking back on the previous 60 years, modern technology has been functioning as a formidable impetus in developing medical science. This, of course, has contributed a lot in releasing the burdens on doctor’ shoulders. But meanwhile, we are becoming lazier and lazier. We are losing our confidence, the confidence of making a correct diagnosis!Without those machines, we’re really fragile.Researchers have proved that a positive mood is of vital importance in a patients’ recovery. But suppose a patient woke up in his bed, only to realize that dozens of tubes were stuck into his body and connected him with several machines, but no doctors around. How would he feel? We might cure cancer in the future, or we would

[will] be able to transplant any organ[s] in [a] human’s body. But we are further and further away from our patients’ heart.Ladies and gentlemen, the conflict(s)between initiative and convenience is not the only problem faced by doctors. We have surely been benefited a lot by advanced science. But we should not be the slave[s] of technology.Human society is built on and will be only built on the sincere communication among our hearts.Thank you very much!
