Analysis on Hamlet’s Character

Abstract:The psychology of human,closely contacted with one’s behavior, is the reflection of his character.The most obvious tensions within Hamlet’s mind are those between his humanism ideal and the inhuman social reality, and between the attitude of optimism and peimism, on which much of the proce of his tragedy depends.In his psychological state, it is not difficult to find the moral sensitivity, m isanthrop ic mood, p rofound melancholy and the tendency of fatalism.It is devoted to the

discuion of the contradictory aspects in Hamlet’s character.It draws the conclusion that the contradictions are due to the catastrophe that falls upon Hamlet.Key words:humanismmelancholycontradictions;

As one of the four tragedies of William’s, it creates the many tensions within Hamlet’s psychology and behavior.The most obvious tensions within humanism.Hamlet reveals the contradiction between ideal society and the human society reality.It reflects the eence of the time.And the characterization of Hamlet is regarded as one of the most outstanding achievements of the work.The tragedy, in many aspects, depicts Hamlet’s psychology by the special art,monologues and dialogues.In Hamlet’s psychological states, it is not difficult to find the moral sensitivity, misanthropic mood, profound melancholy state and the tendency of idealism

Throughout the whole play , we can easily see the contradictory sides of his character.On the one hand , Hamlet is intelligent , brave , prudent and kindhearted;on the other hand, he is timid, carele , and sometimes even a little bit cruel.we can see the contradictions in Hamlet’s character.if we look deep into Hamlet ’ s life before the catastrophe, the task his dead father asks him to fulfill , his perilous situation in carrying out the task and his speculative mind , we can surely get the

answer to it.When the play opens , Hamlet has reached the age of thirty years , and he has received culture of every kind except culture of active life.So when he is called back from the university after his father’s death , the crisis of his life comes on him at the one moment when he cannot meet it.He has a general intention to obey the Ghost , but his conscience secretly condemns this act.He is restrained by conscience or a moral scruple.He could not satisfy himself that it is right to revenge for his father , thus he delays the revenge again and again.When the Ghost appears to him the second time, speaks of his purpose being almost blunted and bids him not to forget , he accuses himself of being tardy and lap sed in time.He couldn ’t understand why he delays and this takes him into shame.He is thrown into the miserable state of being the center of cowardly throughout the whole play.Hardne and cynicism are indeed not part of his nature , but yet , in this crisis of his life , his brooding gloom makes them indubitably present in Hamlet ’s Character.Moreover , he thinks he must be cautious in every movement , as any rash push might endanger his life and spoil the revenge.However ,Hamlet appears too cautious.His habit of exceive reflection over every action comes into the full play.His

highest gift , that is , his reflective mind , instead of helping him , conspires to

paralyze him.His calculating consideration cripples his power of acting.As a result , the energy of resolve is diipated in an endle brooding on the deed required.In short , there are some contradictions in Hamlet’s Character.He is brave as well as timid , careful as well as carele , kind as well as cruel.The main reason for the forming of such a character is Hamlet’s melancholy , which is caused by the

catastrophe he meets , his exceively reflective mind and his inexperience in life.Hamlet is extremely sensitive in morality, which might be affected by the humanism ideal and code of conduct and the religious restraint.His strong disgust upon his uncle’s usurpation, his mother’s incest and his lover’s perfidy no doubt reflects hismoral sensitivity, as the important features of Hamlet’s psychology and also his fatal weakne.The moral problems are the beginning and ending of his thoughts and behavior on action.References:
