The Gift of the Magi
The story is from the book The Four Million, stories about the everyday people of New York City written by O.Henry.The author’s real name was William Sydney Porter who was born in Greensboro ,North Carolina, in1862.He left school at the age of fifteen and worked in many different places.He also spent three years in prison because he took money from a bank.He started to write stories while he was in prison.O.Henry is famous for his stories with surprise endings.“The Gift of the Magi” is his most famous story.The story is manly about a poor couple.The wife’s name is Della while the husband’s name is Jim.First we must say Jim and Della had only two treasures.One was Jim’s gold watch , the other was Della’s hair.On the day before Christmas, Della was alone at home.She thought about buying something good as Christmas gift for Jim, but she had only one dollar and eight-seven cents.What could she buy with so little money? She became upset and cried and cried.Later on, an idea came up into her mind that she could sell her long and brown hair for some money to buy the gift.Della didn’t want to make Jim disappointed, so she ran out of the house and went into a store named MME.SOPHRONIE.HAIR OF ALL KINDS where she sold her hair for twenty dollars.With the money plus one dollar she originally had , she bought a chain which was good, strong
and expensive.Della thought that it would look better with Jim’s gold watch.At seven o’clock, Jim went home from work.He was surprised by Della’s short hair.At that time.Della showed him the present, Jim stood silent and then said:“I love your short hair, Della.I’m sorry I seemed strange.But if you open the box, you will understand.” In the end, it turned out that Jim sold his watch to buy Della the combs which were made to hold up long hair while as we know Della cut her hair to buy Jim the chain.That’s all for the story.The Magi, as we said, were wise men——very wise men.They brought gifts to the baby Jesus.The Magi were wise, so their gifts were wise gifts.Perhaps Jim and Della do not seem wise.They lost the two great treasures of their house.But I want to tell you that they were wise.People like Jim and Della are always wiser than others.Everywhere they are wiser.They are the magi.I am really moved by the story.The deep love between Della and Jim can’t be replaced by the gold watch or the beautiful hair.The most important thing is not the gifts but the harmonious relationship and the understanding between couples.In our real word, there are always lots of conflicts appear in the family, at that time ,maybe we could think of the love between Della and Jim, and think more of others rather than just be selfish.On some special festivals such as New Year’s Day or your family’s birthday, you could buy them some presents which can represent
your best wishes for them and show your love from heart.Whether you are poor or rich, whether or not you have much time to stay with your family, just be friendly to them and often show your love.
