Hamlet(Act 3, Scene 1, lines 55-86)
To be, or not to be-that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,And by opposing end them.To die-to sleep-
No more(death is nothing more than a sleep);and by a sleep to say we endThe heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to.'Tis a consummation(final settlement)
Devoutly to be wish'd.To die-to sleep.To sleep-perchance(maybe)to dream : ay(yes), there's the rub(difficulty)!For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,Must give us pause.There's the respect(consideration)
That makes calamity of so long life. For who would bear the whips(tortures)and scorns of time,Th' oppreor's wrong, the proud man's contumely, love in scorn), the law's delay, the contempt held by the people of high rank), and the spurns(kicks)
That patient merit of th' unworthy takes,When he himself might his quietus(peace, death)make
With a bare bodkin(dagger)? Who would these fardels(burden)bear,To grunt(groan)and sweat under a weary life,But that the dread of something after death-(the country of the dead), from whose bourn(boundary)No traveller returns-puzzles the will,And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience(awarene)does make cowards of us all,And thus the native hue(colour)of resolution
Is sicklied(shade)of thought,And enterprises of great pitch(significance)and moment(urgency)
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action(fail to put into action).(1601)
