I read WutheringHeights written by Emily Bronte in last winter holiday.Recently, I read it again.The whole story is encircled with the revenge of the hero named Heathcliff and the love between the hero and the heroines, Catherine.Nelly, a female servant, narrated almost the story through her memory.At the beginning of the novel, I heartily sympathized with Heathcliff treated badly by many people, especially, Hindley who is the son of his adopted father, Mr.Earnshaw as well as Catherine’s brother.But he was favored by Mr.Earnshaw who later died.And gradually Catherine accepted him and fell in love with him even though she did not notice it, the same as Heathcliff.But, when they grew up, they were estranged, though their love to each other was not changed.But one day, Heathcliff left WutheringHeights.Then Catherine married Edgar who inherited Thrushcro Grange later.As a matter of fact, I cannot understand why Catherine betrayed Heathcliff when she decided to get married with Edgar, because I had thought that Catherine was such a woman who would seek for her true love in her life.But later on, I knew the real purpose of her decision – to help Heathcliff promote the position in others’ minds.What a silly method she took!In my opinion, it was merely poible for people to change others’ minds.Several years later, Heathcliff went back, and the true tragedy
followed.First, Heathcliff inveigled Edgar’s sister, Isabella, into loving him and eloping with him.Then, he were back again to revenge on Hindley who had maltreated him before and Edgar who looked down upon him, even Catherine.He became host of WutheringHeights, and he made Hareton be a savage man, who was the son of Hindley.What I mostly cannot stand was that Heathcliff took cruelty to treat his innocent son, Linton.Even a vicious tiger would not eat its cubs, I couldn’t imagine what a cold man he was.However, he still loved Catherine.Because when Catherine died, he was in deep sorrow and spent several nights in the woods till he met the soul of Catherine.After the death of his wife, Edgar died in a short time later.So smoothly Heathcliff poeedThrushcro Grange after Cathy, Edgar and Catherine’s daughter, marrying Linton.But, because of illne since he was born, Linton died soon.In the end, Hareton and Cathy got married after Heathcliff died.Somewhat the ending of the novel was satisfying.When I finished this book, I read more about it.The only novel Emily had written made a tremendous splash in the literary circles and became an immortal production, because the novel reflected the British society phenomenon and the fierce struggle in cla at that time.In my perspective, the novel is immortal because it reveals human frailties in characters’ extreme conducts, such as Heathcliff’s revenge and cruelty, Catherine’s crazine and unbelievable love.
