有个性和全面发展是辨证统一的。所谓全面发展，说的是受教育者个体必须在德、智、体、美诸方面都得到发展，不可欠缺，即个性的全面发展；所谓“个性”，说的是德、智、体、美等素质因素在受教育者个体身上的特殊组合，不可一律化，即全面发展的个性。二者的关系是辨证统一的关系。事实上，全面发展在不同的受教育个体身上必然会有不同的组合，呈现出不同的个人特点，而不会是千人一面。我们知道，受教育者是社会的现实的人，不同的受教育者在社会生活中处于不同的境地，扮演不同的角色，有不同的经历与经验和不同的智慧品质、兴趣爱好、价值观念、人生追求，对教育也会有不同的态度和选择。因此，全面发展不能不是个人的全面发展；全面发展的过程，不能不是个人个性形成过程。全面发展是个性发展的基础，个性发展是全面发展的动力。没有人的全面发展作为基础，个性发展就是片面畸形的。个性是在全面的基础上产生的，是在人的各方面素质都得到发展后的更高层次的追求。而追求人的个性发展又成了全面发展的动力，因为人在不断对自我个性发展的追求中，必然要以发展自己的全面素质为前提，这个对个性发展的追求又促使了人的全面发展的提高。
