Ball of Fat
This story happened during the Franco-Pruian War.It was said that Pruians were going to enter Rouen of France. The National Guard of France who for two months had been carefully reconnoitering in the neighboring woods, shooting sometimes their own sentinels, and ready for a combat whenever a little wolf stirred in the thicket, had now returned to their firesides. But finally, Pruians won the war.As soon as the invaders had brought the town quite under subjection with their inflexible discipline, without having been guilty of any of the horrors for which they were famous along their triumphal line of march, people began to take courage, and the need of trade put new heart into the commerce of the country. Some had large interests at Havre, which the French army occupied, and they wished to try and reach this port by going to Dieppe by land and there embarking. They used their influence with the German soldiers with whom they had an acquaintance, and finally, an authorization of departure was obtained from the General-in-chief.Then, a diligence, with four horses, having engaged for this journey, and ten persons having engaged seats in it, it was resolved to set out on Tuesday morning before daylight, in order to escape
observation. For some time before, the frost had been hardening the earth and on Monday, toward three o’clock, great black clouds coming from the north brought the snow which fell without interruption during the evening and all night. At half past four in the morning, the travellers met in the courtyard of Hotel Normandie where they were to take carriage. They were still full of sleep, and shivering with cold under their wraps. In the carriage, there included Mr.Loiseau and his wife, Mr.Carre-Lamadon and his wife, the Count and Counte Hubert de Breville, and the six people comprised the foundation of the carriage, because they belonged to the upper cla.And the rest included two sisters, Cornudet the democrat, and the woman, one of those of them called coquette, was celebrated for her embonpoint, which had been given the nickname of Ball of Fat.A t first, all the ladies showed disrespect to the fat women(Ball of Fat). But as it’s not a short journey, soon they became hungry. The fat woman was the only one brought food with her, she share dher food with them generously. So the rest changed their attitude. They praised her.Just for food, so you can know that what kind of persons they were. Then they came to Totes, a town. This was a place that had been controlled by Germans. Therefore they must stay
there as told. The story now began. The Pruian officer told Ball of Fat in private that if they wanted to leave there, she must have sex with him.Ball of Fat of course refused him.For days, she was troubled by this, and her fellows were not allowed to leave, and they didn’t know the reason. Then they got the truth. At first, they showed sympathy for her, and they were angry with the officer who had insulted him.But as I have told you, they could easily change. Finally, they showed disrespect for Ball of Fat again because they didn’t want to stay there any more. Those so-called noble female even said that Ball of Fat was a prostitute , what if she serverd that handsome officer. Therefore they talked to the fat woman.Ball of Fat then decided to satisfy the demand of the officer. As a result of that, they were all allowed to leave.Although they managed to leave and it all attributed to Ball of Fat, now the rest of the carriage was not grateful for what she had done for them, they even did not want to have a look at her.Ball of Fat was angry, tears paed down her face. The rest in the later journey enjoyed themselves to the fullest. There were much laughter in the carriage.....This is a really ironical story, when Ball of Fat rescued all of them, they should showed no disrespect to her, and they were really ungrateful.Though Ball of Fat was a prostitute, she had her own right to be proud, she also had dignity that we should respect. In their opinion, Ball of Fat was a shame, But in my view, they were all a shame to a nation.
