Piano prodigy, Lang Lang, remembers exactly what made him want to be a concert pianist. It was a piece of music he heard as a child, while watching cartoons at home in Shen Yang, China.Lang came to the United States when he was fourteen and a half, to study at Philadephia's Curtis Institute. To ease his transition into his new home and Language, his teacher and mentor, Gray Graffman, provided him with a translator. But, because Lang, by his own admiion, was lazy, he didn't make much headway.Lang: A year after, my English still quite bad, and Mr.Graffman was very upset with me.He said, “OK, now, I will, take off your translator. You must speak otherwise I'm not going to give you leon anymore.” So...so, he pushed very hard. And, it works very well.Lang Lang came to America's attention in 1999, when he was the last minute substitute for pianist Andre Watts, in a performance with the Chicago Symphony. The audience was attracted by his good looks and intensely physical playing. But the critics were divided as to whether he was excellent or just an exhibitionist.Lang doesn't listen to his critics.Lang: I think for me, my concentration is really into the music and to respect the composers and then to try to make it very original but at the same time very personal.Plus, the important(thing)now for live concert, you always play slightly differently, and I think, if you really enjoy, you enjoy what you are doing, and this shouldn't be a problem. And, obviously, he does enjoy what he's doing. At the piano playing Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Lang leans forward and rolls hishead back, eyes closed, in ecstasy. You almost swoon with him at the sheer deliciousne of the music.Lang: And I think a good musician should play and everyone likes it.Not only in beginner, like it or not only in the...the only the expert like it, but, really, everyone. If you really play the best you can and also play really with your entire heart, you just pull that entire thing out into the keyboard. And then you make the music really flow to their hearts, in a very natural way.I think they will appreciate that, and they will really think of today as a beautiful day.I think as we will have a good dream for next couple of days, and good feelings. And when you have good feelings, you have a better life.
