Review of Wuthering Heights

Love is not always something about happine, and people who love each other are not always to treat each other friendly. As we all know, many lovers couldn‟t date or marry because of their families or the society and the age where they live. While in the romantic novel------Wuthering Heights, written in by Emily Bronte and first published in 1847 by Thomas C.Newby, the main reason that causes the separation of lovers is their own.The novel was in Victorian Age where the struggle between the workers and capitalists became the fundamental contradiction in English social life.It depicts a tragedy love, which shows the social reality deeply, so it is a unity of romanticism and realism. This novel wasn‟t welcomed immediately for some reasons, like obscure words and over-ugly description of humanity. But now it has been regarded as a triumph and Ralph Fox, the revolutionary critic of England, regarded Wuthering Heights as one of the three greatest books of the same age.And I was totally absorbed in it by its plots and in-depth characters‟ delineation when I read it.Through the romantic, tragic love and revenge, Emily with reflective and critic tone, makes us aware of the conflict between the oppreed ma and capitalists and weakne of humanity. It takes place during the late 1700s and early 1800s in a small English town.Wuthering Heights begins with Ellen Dean, the chief narrator, telling the story of landlord------Heathcliff to Lockwood, the renter and an intermediary between Ellen and reader. And it employs the flashback way to develop its plot. What‟s more, Emily adapts some Gothic elements, such as Lockwood‟s horrible dreams in Catherine‟s room.It opens with the contrasting and yet well-balanced parallelism of the Earnshaw and Linton families.Wuthering Heights is high on the barren moorland, naked to natural elements, where The Earnshaws live with their two active, wild, untamed children of storm.Thrushcro Grange is sheltered in the valley below, where the ideal home of Linton family with their two calm, gentle and paive kids lives. But harmony is destroyed by the arrival of an Heathcliff, a source of discord by turning the wife against the husband and the children against the father, succeeds in replacing Hindley in his father‟s favor and separating Catherine from her brother.Heathcliff falls in love with Catherine, but Catherine can‟t abandon the concept of cla and lust of money. And Catherine chooses Edgar to be his husband, so Heathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights.Heathcliff comes back for revenge after 3 years‟ absence to enter straight between Catherine and Edgar, forces Catherine to an early grave and drives Edgar into endle pain and proves destructive to Catherine and Edgar. And finally the harmony is reestablished when Heathcliff unites with Catherine in death, leaving young Cathy and Hareton to start their young and hopeful life.Emily succefully moulds a complicated character------Heathcliff.For one thing, Heathcliff seems to be an absolute devil, even a criminal. He steals all the property with the trap by playing cards with Hindley after he comes back. And he ruthlely ill-treats Isabella and Hareton. When he kidnapped Cathy and Ellen and forced Cathy to marry to his dying son to steal The Linton‟s property, Heathcliff went against law and social mores. From this perspective, we are hard to generate the feeling of

sympathy towards him.For another thing, the tenderne and great love is in Heathcliff‟s heart. At the beginning of this novel, readers may have defined Heathcliff to be a cruel devil, and Heathcliff wanted to drive Lockwood out of his house in a snowy evening. But the scene, which is full of paion, appeared. In chapter 2, “my landlord, thinking he was alone, threw himself on the bed, pushed open the window and called into the darkne.„Come in!Come in!‟ he cried, tears rolling down his face.„Catherine, do come!My darling, hear me this time!‟” Therefore, we could touch his inner tenderne and great love. When it comes to the reason why Heathcliff has such a complicated character, I think it should owe to the society and his own. When he and Catherine was in a pure love, he was a rebel against the oppreion. But he becomes a devil gradually after he knew that Catherine couldn‟t abandon the concept of cla a f money. What‟s more, the way he threatened Hindley in the childhood made the foundation for his revenge.Another main character is Catherine.Though she died before the novel is written for a half, Catherine‟s ghost still exists.Catherine is also a complicated character. She is friendly and raged, tenderne and excitement, paionate and self-willed.But her deadly weakne is that she couldn‟t resist the attraction of the graceful life of Linton‟s family. And she chose Edgar as her husband. And her decision directly caused the tragedy of their love.In chapter 10, when Heathcliff visits Catherine for the last time, Catherin admits this point. So the society and family background where she lives mould her character. There is no doubt that Emily has succefully represented the novel‟s theme that a full human life in a capitalist society was impoible of attainment. The author comes out this novel by some unique devices, like using flashback, multiple narrators, Gothic elements and the knowledge of Yorkshire where she lives. And she moulds Heathcliff perfectly who is a devil as well as is worthy of our sympathy.By all means, Wuthering Heights is a powerful work of Emily Bronte.
