Description:
This introductory course will have two parts in content: philosophy of language in proper and its relevance to other areas of philosophical inquiry.The central challenge that will occupy us in this course is to give a philosophical account of how language works.We will deal with such topics as proper names, definite descriptions, natural kind terms, propositional attitudes, speech acts, implicatures, metaphors, and various iues concerning meaning.Requirements:
(1)You must finish the weekly reading aignments prior to each of our cla meeting.(2)There are homework aignments on a bi-weekly basis.(3)Each student is required to do a no-le-than 15 minute cla presentation.(4)Midterm exam consists of a short paper(1000 words, double spaced)due on the day of our
week 10 meeting.Final exam will be in claroom.Grading Policy:
Your grade for this course will depend on your performance with respect to cla presentation(10%), homework(20%), midterm paper(30%), and final exam(40%).Texts:
