urCabinet.I'mproudofoursub-cabinet.IamproudofourWhiteHousestaff.AsIpointedoutlastnight,surewe'vedonesomethingswronginthisAdministration,andthetopmanalwaystakesthereoibility,andI'veneverduckedit.ButIwanttosayonething:Wecanbeproudofit--five-and-a-halfyears.NomanornowomancameintothisAdministrationandleftitwithmoreofthisworld'sgoodsthanwhenhec

amein.Nomanornowomaneverprofitedatthepublicexpeeorthepublictill.Thattellomethingaboutyou.Mistakes,yebutforpersonalgain,never.Youdidwhatyoubelievedin.Sometimesright,sometimeswrong.AndIonlywishthatIwerea--awealthyman--atthepresenttimeI'vegottofindawaytopaymytaxes--andifIwere,I'dliketorecompeeyouforthesacrificesthatallofyou'vemadetoserveinGovernment.ButyouaregettingsomethinginGovernment--andIwantyoutotellthistoyourchildren,andIhopethenation'schildrenwillhearit,too--somethinginGovernmentservicethatisfarmoreimportantthanmoney.It'sacausebiggerthanyourself.Itisthecauseofmakingthisthegreatestnationintheworld,theleaderoftheworld,becausewithoutourleadershiptheworldwillknownothingbutwar,poiblystarvation,orworse,intheyearsahead.Withourleadershipitwillknowpeace;itwillknowplenty.Wehavebeengenerous,andwewillbemoregenerousinthefutureasweareableto.Butmostimportant,wemustbestronghere,stronginourhearts,stronginoursouls,stronginourbelief,andstronginourwillingnetosacrifice,asyouhavebeenwillingtosacrifice,inapecuniaryway,toserveinGovernment.SomethingelseI'dlikeforyoutotellyouryoungpeople.Youknow,peopleoftencomeinandsay,“WhatwillItellmykids?”(Youknow?)Theylookatgovernmentand--sortofaruggedlife,andtheyseethemistakesthataremade.Theygettheimpreionthateverybodyishereforthepurposeoffeatheringhisnest.That'swhyImadethisearlierpoint--notinthisAdministration,notonesinglemanorwoman.AndIsaytothem,“Therearemanyfinecareers.Thiscountryneedsgoodfarmers,goodbusinemen,goodplumbers,goodcarpenters.”
