All of London celebrates as Prince William marries Kate Middleton
The world watched a fairy tale come to life this morning as a handsome young prince and his beautiful bride were wed.After weeks of frenzied anticipation, Prince William of Wales—second in line to become King of the United Kingdom(U.K.)—married Catherine Middleton, known as Kate, with all the pomp and ceremony one would expect of a royal wedding.The event was quite a sight.Almost 2,000 guests attended the ceremony, watching William and Kate walk down the aisle in the country’s most famous royal church, Westminster Abbey.The guest list included royalty and politicians from foreign nations, world-famous celebrities, and important busine leaders.Thousands of onlookers waited outside for a chance to see the historic wedding proceion, or formal parade.Some spent days and nights camped out on nearby streets for a good spot to see Kate in her beautiful gown, William dreed in his military uniform, and his grandmother, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, leading the wedding party.After the ceremony, the bride and groom traveled by horse-drawn carriage to Buckingham Palace.There, they kied on the balcony to the wild applause of the crowds gathered outside.The whole country is celebrating with parades and parties in the couple’s honor.People have been so taken with Kate’s marriage to Britain’s beloved son William that the royal family even agreed to stream their wedding live on YouTube for the whole world to see.BRITAIN’S NEW PRINCESS
After the wedding, Queen Elizabeth II officially gave her grandson and new granddaughter-in-law the royal titles of Duke and Duche of Cambridge.The wedding had caused a small controversy because Kate is what is known in Britain as a commoner, or a person without a royal title.Prince William is second in line to the throne, after his father, Prince Charles.If William is ever crowned King, the Duche will become Queen.To millions of people, her story is nothing le than a fairy tale come true.These days, monarchs(rulers, such as Kings and Queens, who often inherit their position)don’t have much real power in the U.K.Some people question what function the royal family serves.But the young Prince and Prince are very popular members of a long line of public figures who have represented the country’s history and traditions.For centuries, monarchs governed Great Britain with almost complete authority.Today, the United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, in which the monarch's power is limited by a constitution.The head of the British government is the Prime Minister, whose role is similar to that of the U.S.President.The British Parliament, like the U.S.Congre, makes the laws of the land.But the public remains fascinated by the royals.Former British colonies, like the U.S.and India, and countries where Elizabeth is still the Head of State, such as Canada and Australia, buzzed with excitement for months before the wedding.As the enormous ceremony was getting started, the Prince joked with his soon-to-be wife’s father, “We're supposed to have just a small family affair.”
No More Packed Lunches
A school in Chicago bans students from bringing lunches from home
Millions of kids acro America regularly walk into school carrying their lunches in brown bags or lunch boxes.But at the Little Village Academy—a public school in Chicago, Illinois—the days of home-packed sandwiches, snacks, and drinks are over.The school has banned lunches brought from home.Kids have only one choice at lunchtime—the school’s meal.Little Village Academy’s principal, Elsa Carmona, says the rule is meant to help make sure kids eat healthy food.”Nutritionwise, it is better for the children to eat at the school....It's milk versus a Coke,“ she told the Chicago Tribune.She added that students with food allergies are allowed to bring their own lunch.Like other schools around the nation, Chicago schools have been working hard to make their meals healthier.Last year, Chicago set strict nutrition standards for school lunches.Whole grains will be offered regularly, and more fruits and vegetables will be served.FOOD FRENZY
Some of the students at Village Academy are very unhappy with the new rule.They say they would make their own healthy choices if allowed to bring lunch to school.Fourth-grader Eric Sanchez tells the Tribune, “I would bring a juice and a sandwich.”
Parents are also concerned about the ban.One big reason is cost.A school lunch at Little Village Academy costs $2.25, which is more than some parents spend on a packed lunch.Another concern is that some students won’t eat the school lunch.Parents do not want to pay for food their children will not eat—or for their kids to skip lunch.J.Justin Wilson, a researcher at the Center for Consumer Freedom, believes that the rule infringes on, or violates, parents’ rights.”Some parents may want to pack a gluten-free meal for a child, and others may have no problem with a child enjoying soda," he says in an interview with the Tribune.Alternatives to outright banning do exist.Claremont Academy Elementary School, also in
Chicago, allows packed lunches but confiscates, or takes away, any exceively salty or sugary foods.In Alabama, Hartselle Junior High has prohibited students from bringing drinks from home.
