The Comparison between George W.Bush’s and Kennedy’s Inaugural Speeches

American president’s inaugural speech always attracts tremendous attention. It shows every president’s ambition and courage. And people could see the president’s political ideals form it.Here, I will compare George W.Bush’s inaugural speech and Kennedy’s from three parts.I.Lexical level

1.Word length

Stylisticians usually set six letters or three syllables in a word as a standard to analyze the length of the words. The words with more than six letters are usually regarded as long words. These long words may be words of Latin, French or Greek origin, which are usually formal words. There are 297 words with six letters, which is 12.3% of the whole words in Bush’ s addre. While there are 349 words with six letters, which is 26% of the whole words in Kennedy’ s addre.2.Word claes

Adjective:There are 5.6% words in Bush’ s inaugural addrees are adjectives. While there are 7.4% words in Kennedy’s inaugural addrees are adjectives. Most of the adjectives they used are subjective and emotional words.Pronoun: Another noticeable fact is the use of the first-person pronouns, which is determined by the personal tenor of the inaugural

addre, and is related to its interpersonal function. The most frequently used p ronouns are the firstperson pronouns.Ⅱ.Syntactic level

In Bush’s addre, the percentage of simple sentence is 61% and that of compound sentence is 39%.While in Kennedy’ s addre, the case is just the opposite. Both of them use simple present tense and future simple tense frequently. These policies are planned to be adopted in the future, so the simple future is frequently used. And these policies are based on the present situation, so the simple present is frequently used.Ⅲ.Rhetorical level

Parallelism: parallelism is about consistency, and having all the parts in the same form.In a sentence, compound verbs or other words should be in the same form.In the inaugural of Bush, parallelismhas been used for many times. For example, “ It is the story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old, a story of a slave-holding society that became a servant of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not poe, to defend but not to conquer. It is the American story.A story of flawed and fallible people, united acro

the generations bygrand and enduring ideals.” The same thing happens in the inaugural of Kennedy. There are four phrases with the same structure“ let both sides...” in Kennedy's speech.Antithesis: Antithesis is the use ofjuxtaposition with two oppositecharacters or ideas in literature, it is used to place these opposingforcesparallel to one another and to see the traits in each one.In Bush's speech, for example, “Now we must choose if the example of our fathers and mothers will inspire us or condemn us.” In Kennedy's speech,“ if a free society cannot help the many who are poor,it cannot save the few who are rich”, “the rich” and “the poor” are also a pair of antithesis.Metaphor: It refers to a comparison between unlike thingswithoutthe use of “like” or “as”.In the speech of Bush, we can find many

metaphor, for example, “Through much of the last century, America's faith in freedom and democracy was a rock in a raging sea.Now it is a seed upon the wind, taking root in many nations.” We can also find a lot of metaphor in the speech of Kennedy.By using metaphor, authorcan show us a vivid image, and the article will become more attractive.
