Here's some information on how to write a speech about a quotation
How to give the Impromptu Speech
1.Step one – explain the meaning of the quotation or proverb.Say something like: “my
understanding of what __(the author)____ was trying to say is that ___(here explain what the quotation means in your own words).2.Step two – develop the topic – you can do this in several ways depending on the nature of
the proverb
a.Agree or disagree with the quotation and explain why(you should give 3 points to support
your position or tell a story or a personal experience that shows why you agree or disagree): 1)“I can’t agree more with ________about __________ for 3 reasons” or “I really agree with
what this quotation says about _____ because of my own personal experience” or “When I read this quotation, I couldn’t help but think about ___(tell story).2)“I’m afraid I can’t agree with this quotation for several reasons”(then give your points, or
tell your personal experience, or tell a story)
b.topic of the quotation(after you have explained the meaning of the
quotation).Once again, you can either give 3 or 4 points about the general topic, or you can tell one or two stories that are related to the topic in general.“Well, as we can see, this quotation is about the topic of(succe/diligence/happine/etc.).When I think about(succe/diligence/happine/etc.), several points come to mind”
3.Bring your speech to a conclusion by repeating the quotation and/or repeating your 3 main points. An Example:On the screen behind me, you can see a very interesting quotation by : “The word “diligence” means a constant and earnest effort to accomplish succe – in other words – to work hard and to never give up.My understanding of what Benjamin Franklin was trying to say in this quotation is that people who are diligent are usually succeful in their lives. Some people may say they are lucky, but in reality, they are only reaping the benefits of their hard work and
persistence. So, while many people may think our succe depends on how lucky we are, Benjamin Franklin believed that diligence makes you more lucky – in other words – if you work hard and never give up, you will have more opportunities than the lazy person who easily gives up, and therefore you will have more “luck.”
As we all know, diligence has many advantages – let me share with you 3 advantages of
diligence that come immediately to my mind:number 1)diligence makes us more succeful, as we’ve already discued;number 2)diligence gives us more personal satisfaction in
knowing that we have put forth our best effort, and 3)diligence makes us more liked and respected by other people.(you will then develop and explain these 3 points a little more). So, in conclusion, let us remember that.”If we
work hard, and never give up, we will be more “lucky” and succeful.Thank you!
