Competition Is Ultimately More Beneficial Than

Detrimental to Society

Competition and cooperation are of the most important factors in the modernized society.Cooperation integrates the wisdom of several people so that the project may be completed faster and better.Competition, in another word, emphasize the advantage of every people in the group with the same intention.Though baleful competition exists, competition is definitely more beneficial than detrimental to society.Competition makes people more active.Without competition, a lot of people will consider themselves the best in their majors.Though such feeling of confidence is important, it inevitably limits their intentions to develop the knowledge and technique. The appearance of another specialist will challenge the importance of the colleague in the same group and encourage him to learn more and do more.A good example is in the IT program. In a work team, if there is only one person which is good at programming, he may think himself the best, and seldom considers improving his programs. Now a new programmer which is smart and hard working comes into the same group, always uses fewer languages to complete a procedure. The former programmer must face the fact that he is not the best there, needs to learn more and work more to keep up with the later programmer, while the latter one must study too so

that he may be always better than the first programmer.Besides, competition is beneficial to the global improvement. With the development of communication and transportation, merchandize can be easily transported from one country to another country, as well as new technique can be easily learned from one region to another region.International competitions in a lot of fields appear. With a lot of brands of the same kind of commodity, customers always prefer the brand with better quality and cheap price. Therefore international competition make the manufactures develop this kind of merchandize with the good quality and appropriate price using the better technique. For instance, medicine is very important in daily life.At first there is only one medicine which can cure TB, a lung disease, with the severe adverse reactions. Then to occupy the better market, a new medicine for this disease appears which is cheap with little adverse reaction.People who suffer from this kind of disease will definitely choose the later medicine for both the treatment and the quality of life.Admittedly, it should be confeed that there are inevitably some negative effects that competition brings to us.Price competition sometimes make a factory bankruptcy. To make their products more profitable, some industries do what they can to decrease the cost of the product ignoring the health to the customers, the pollutions to the circumstance, and so on.However, such negative effects shouldn’t be too

exaggerated to overshadow the important role that competition plays in our society.More important, People are now wary of such competitions and there are some rules to prohibit the baneful competition. In sum, despite some negative effects, competition is still beneficial rather than detrimental to us.Is Healthy Competition Between Children Beneficial or Not?

Competition between children in schools is often replaced with an everyone's a winner mentality. Is this the right attitude and what do the experts say?

Some schools would rather not promote competition between

children.Instead, every child gets a prize and nobody wins or loses. Is this the right attitude to foster? If kids fail to receive a reward for outstanding achievements, are schools inadvertently teaching children that to aim higher is not worthwhile? What do the experts say?Is Competition Between Kids Healthy?

Recently a close friend confided that her young son had entered a talent contest at the local school.Having asked how it went, the friend announced that all of the children performed admirably but the entire experience had been rather deflating because there were no winners or losers. All of the children did an act and went on home. Why it was called a “contest” left several parents a little bemused. Why are some schools turning away from competition? Is it healthy for teachers to remove competitivene from the school system? If schools do this, will kids expect to win all of the time and if so, how will that impact social roles in later life?

Alfie Kohn is the author of eleven books and lectures widely at education conferences and universities as well as to parent groups and corporations. In his 1987 article, “The Case Against Competition,” Kohn says that “healthy competition is actually a contradiction in terms” and that competition is a recipe for hostility, “It's always unneceary and inappropriate at school, at play, and at home.”

Teaching children to be competitive, believes Kohn, makes kids

view other children as obstacles to personal succe but having children cooperate instead, helps children to communicate and trust in others.Kohn believes that a child can be raised to be made aware of competition, without actually being a part of it.Marilyn Lopes, extension specialist and family life educator at the University of Maachusetts, appears to agree with Kohn. In, “Competition: Is it Healthy for Children?” Lopes says that, “Competition is a learned behavior,” and that research dating back to the 1930s, suggests that competition is not good for children because it is a win-lose situation, with only the winner being happy.Teaching Healthy Competition

Dr.Sylvia Rimm Ph.D suggests that healthy competition can be taught. In her online article, “Teaching Healthy Competition,” Rimm argues that it isn't the competition itself that causes the problems, but the negative reactions of “poor competitors” that give competitions a bad name.Rimm says that her research into the childhoods of succeful women showed that “winning in competition was the most frequently mentioned positive experience.” Dr.Lawrence Cutner agrees with Rimm. In, “Insights for Parents: Stepsibling Rivalry,” Kutner says that rivalry can be healthy and act as a teaching role in social skills. While there appears to be no concrete answer for parents with regard

to healthy competition, common sense does indeed suggest that this is another iue that demands a careful balancing act.Obviously overly competitive parents that stand on the sidelines screaming and cuing out the referee are perhaps going a little too far.On the other hand, it is difficult to imagine that by not preparing children to accept that one cannot always win, kids will be at a tremendous disadvantage when it comes to forming roles in society.Without an incentive for achievement, would a child be expected to aim for mediocrity? Minus a motivation to excel, why try to excel at all, be it in academics, sports or a future career?
