Though we all know the importance of fire prevention, I didn’t use to think the halogen lamp or bulb, this kind of prohibited items, relate closely to the fire safety.I held the view that the fire is usually caused by open fire, which do not contact with the specifications of the lamp. Moreover, the majority university houses should have smoke alarms and automatic extinguishing systems which can protect us from fires. That why I am so carele about the specifications of products, although I have already read the report on the university housing fire given by the U.S.Fire Administration’s(USFA’s)before, which estimated 3,800 university housing fires occurred annually in the United States.According to the U.S.Fire Administration’s report on the university housing fires, confined building fires are small fire incidents that are limited in scope, confined to noncombustible containers, rarely result in serious injury or large content loes, and expected to have no significant accompanying property loes due to flame damage. However, I find that 16.8% of university housing fires maybe result from heat source being too close to combustibles, and 15.5% relate to abandoned or discarded materials or products, as well as 12.9 % concerns unspecified misuse of material or product.A bulb does not seem so important that can lead to fires, but a little leak will sink a great ship, unspecified misuse of bulb is a potential threat to the fire safety.Additionally, the smoke alarms and automatic extinguishing systems is not as powerful as I thought. In 13 percent of confined university housing fires, the smoke alarm effectivene was unknown.Smoke alarm did not alert occupants in 3.6 percent of the cases.Furthermore, fire is too small to activate smoke alarm in 9.4 percent of confined university housing fires. What’s worse, in 3.1% of the cases smoke alarm alerted occupants, but occupants failed to respond. In 56.8% of the cases the house does not install the automatic extinguishing systems.Perhaps it seems that the poibility of fires is not very high. But public safety is no trival matter, and life safety is the matter of substance. Therefore, even a tiny bulb could be the fuse for a disaster.Through this leon, I will pay more attention to the fire prevention in the future. And tell my fellow SMU students that we should follow electrical safety guidelines to prevent fires. There are some following tips about electrical safety guidelines that we SMU students should put an eye on.Firstly, we should buy the electrical devices or power equipment, which have the label of a recognized testing laboratory.Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture.Secondly, do not overload outlets or power strips. If you are not sure whether it is overload or not, you can check your wall socket or extension cord.If it is warm to the touch, it is overloaded.Thirdly, make sure that power strips also have a surge protection device so that we can protect personal property from damage caused by fluctuation in the flow of electricity.Fourthly, cover outlets and switches with wall plates to prevent shocks.Fifthly, use the prongs of polarized plugs as they used to be;any altering to make them fit an outlet may cause fires.Sixthly, avoid running electrical cords under carpets or furniture where they may be pinched or stepped on as well as putting cords against walls or running them under or acro

doorways.Heat can build up and start a fire.In addition, cords can be frayed and expose wires, which can also result in a fire.Seventhly, extension cords are for temporary use only.Have a licensed electrician determine if additional circuits or outlets are needed.Eighthly, replace cracked, damaged, and loose electrical cords.Ninthly, keep lamps, light fixtures, and light bulbs away from anything that can burn, including lamp shades, furniture, bedding, curtains, clothing, and flammable or combustible gases and liquids.Never cover lamps with clothing, paper, drapes or other things that can burn.Tenthly, make sure Ground fault circuit interrupters are installed in bathrooms, basements, garages, outdoors, at kitchen counters, and other locations in the home where there are sinks or basins.Besides, do not forget to test Arc fault circuit interrupters and Ground fault circuit interrupters once a month by pushing the test button to make sure whether they are working properly. And the most important, whenever you find recurring problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers, a tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance, discolored or warm wall outlets or switches, a burning smell or rubbery odor coming from an appliance, flickering lights, sparks from an outlet, or cracked or broken outlets, call a licensed electrician immediately.
