In my opinion, Santiago is succeful.The following is my way of thinking.Firstly, let me make a brief introduction about the Story.I)Introduction
The Old Man and the Sea earned its author the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1952, and was instrumental in winning him the Nobel Prize for literature two years later.It is a short novel about Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman who has gone for 84 days without taking a fish.Therefore, the boy, Mandolin, who used to sail with him, is forced to leave him and catch in another boat.The old man insists on fishing alone and at last, he hooks an eighteen-foot, giant marlin, the largest he has ever known.But the fish is very powerful and disobedient.The fight between giant marlin and the old man has begun and fortunately the old man won.But, on his way to home, the come acro sharks as much might and many weapons as he can summon, but only to find a giant skeleton of his marlin left after his desperate defense.At last, Santiago, having lost what he fought for, reached the shore and struggles to his shack.Secondly, let me show you my thinking.II)Main Body
On the Morning of July 7th at 2 o’clock, 1961, Hemingway took his precious silver double barrel shotgun, aimed at his mouth, with the courage ,he ended his life.Perhaps just as he said, “A man who have the courage to die than to suffer the humiliation of body and mind of the terrorist is much more happine.”
People always think of Hemingway's the old man and the sea, as the representative of the tough guy spirit man is not born to fail, “a man can be destroyed, but not defeated”, all those who have read the novel on the two sentence leaves a deep impreion.Great work can send out the symbol and fable meanings, perhaps, this is more than simply expre his amazing willpower moves more readers thinking twice deeplyin the work.Santiago is succeful,because from this work,we can find Santiago is an optimistic , undefeated and succeful man.①Santiago is an optimistic man.In the dark to the depths of the sea, when the old man fighted with the big marlin, he felt the stars in the sky are his distant friends.When he was so sleepy that he spoke to seabirds, “birds, Come to my house if you like“.②Santiago is an undefeated man.In almost desperately fighted again and again, the idea of the old man was ”it’s ashamed to lose hope!” he always told himself “I don't want to let the body break down and die in the hand of a fish!”.The image of his mind emerged to the lion, the symbol of power.③Santiago is a succeful man.Santiago was that he behaved perfectly and honorably, with great courage and
endurance.While losing to the sharks the giant fish he had caught, he came with the meage that while man may grow old, and be wholly down on his luck, he could still dare to stick to the rules, persisted when he was destroyed, and thus by the manner of his losing to win his victory.Skeleton was the pillar of the old man’s spirit, Hemingway seemed to not let the old man Santiago succe, but with bare skeleton out of the old man played the hardne of life.“I will company with you to the death”, said the tough guy to fish.Metaphor for his own heroism and his power tend to be tough.In the end of the story, the boy named Manolin-he wanted to inherit the old man's career.Fishing career far more than to be heritage.The young boy, a symbol of strength and hope, even the old man, his heart is also young.In the story described several times to the lion, of the beach, the lion was happy to play with each other, they emerged in the old man's dream, it had been in the old man's heart, and also revealed the old man will never grow old.At last, I’d like to make a conclusion.III)Conclusion
Why Hemingway didn't let the old man finally win(in fact, the old man was the winner)? So isn’t it more could reflect the great hero? The old man's story was not only as a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also is a symbol of the human spirit indestructible.In reality, though he failed, but in spirit, he was a winner, his indomitable fighting spirit showed the nobility and dignity of the people.In everyone’s all the life, who hasn't ever experienced a failure? And even the most
succeful people also experienced a failure.The causes of our failure maybe different, but no matter how the failure makes us hard to accept, they makes us grow up in some degree.As for Santiago ,if he put out to sea again, he would have the hope of victory.I think, maybe it is because this kind of dangerous life environment and the tenacity of life attitude that this work is more and more attractive.Life itself is a kind of endle pursuit, in the story the old man said, “But man is not born for defeat, a man can be destroyed, but not defeated.” This sentence reminds me of Beethoven's
“destiny symphony”, Beethoven once said: “I can be destroyed, but I can't conquer.” They illustrate the meaningful of heroes, the meaningful of life.And this sentence also points to the ideas of the story: people must face the failure bravely.From this aspect, Santiago’s victory in the novella is not important, but a person's life value.The old man who dared to challenge his limit, beyond time and time, again and again, he let us have to admire that he brought to human was a kind of self-confidence, a strong spiritual force!
The Old Man and the Sea told us the strength of life, told us how to deal with birth, aging, illne, and death, and told us how to wide our heart, like the sea.The old man was alone, he was one of the travelers in the ideal path, but he was not lonely, because his will was so strong.Let’s see sharks as difficulties, ate our succe and happine.But just as the child said, “He didn't beat you.Not the fish."
A man can be destroyed but not defeated
Failure is not so fearful to us, but the terrible is that we yield to failure, once we yield to failure, all of our dreams won't be come true.It is very important in our really significant life, I think life is just like the old man’s fishing, we should appear so bravely to our life, even without succe, but in fact we are the winner, because there is no regret.Our life will be wonderful if we make an effort just like Santiago.“Never give up”, it is what the Old man and the Sea tell us.So, in my opinion, Santiago is succeful!
