Analysis on the Mother’s Negative Characteristic in the

Rocking-Horse Winner

The story “The rocking horse winner” was about a young boy, Paul, competed for his mother's love.However, his mother’ greed brought him to death.In other words, Paul’s death was caused by his mother’s greed.While what caused his mother’s greed? The way I see it, it was his mother’s negative characteristic.The story opens: There was a woman who was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck.She married for love, and the love turned to dust.The mother, Hester, was a woman of wealthy birth, and she was attractive.Also she was a faire lady with love.Her marriage illustrated this point.While the man was not as rich as Hester wanted.She lived in style, but she was never satisfied with it.The love did not bring her the happy life as she expected.Thus the unhappy life became the very factor that caused her negative characteristic.The first paragraph of the short story wrote: She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them...when her children were present, she always felt the center of her heart go hard...Only she herself knew that at the center of her heart was a hard little place that could not feel love, no, not for anybody.She knew herself well—she was no love for anybody now.She did nothing to solve the problem.She did not find problems in herself, and did not find ways to make up it.In particular, her son, Paul, did his best to compete for his mother’s love.But she could not feel it.What’s more, she always treated her children with indifference at home.She bought expensive and splendid toys to her children at Christmas according to the tradition, instead of showing love to her children.So, Hester’s negative attitude towards her children led to the tragedy—Paul’s death.Hester was a beautiful woman who was very well off when she was younger.Yet after she got married, everything went down hill.Even though her husband provided for her a modest lifestyle, she always felt an anxiety which was the grinding sense of the shortage of money.Their small income was not nearly enough for the social position which they had to keep up.Although the father’s job had good prospects, at

least now these prospects had never materialized.The father was always very handsome and expensive in his tastes.So did Hester.Her children were growing up, and they would have to go school.In every way, she felt that there must be more money.She wanted to do something succeful.But the fact proved to be failure.As time went by, deep lines came into her face.She imputed this situation to bad luck.When Paul asked her why they were the poor members of the family, she answered bitterly that it was because your father had no luck.From the dialogue, we could see Hester’s negative characteristic obviously.She did not struggle to make a better life.She did not find greed in herself, and got rid of her greed.Instead, she believed that her husband had bad luck.And she had married to the unlucky man.Now she negatively thought that she became unlucky, too.Generally speaking, from the story The Rocking-Horse Winner, We could see Hester was a very negative person.Her unexpected marriage life was the source of her negative attitude towards life.She blamed her husband for all of her problems.She did not find wrongs in herself.In addition, her negative behaviors made Paul died.
