The Man I Love And Hate

----Wuthering Heights

Emily Jane Bronte was an English novelist and poet, best remembered for her solitary novel, Wuthering Heights, which received mixed reviews when it first came out and was often condemned for its portrayal of amoral paion, but subsequently became an English literary claic.Wuthering Heights is a story about love and revenge. In a series of flashbacks and time shifts, Emily Bronte draws a powerful picture of the enigmatic Heathcliff, the protagonist, who is brought to Heights from the streets of Liverpool by Earnshaw and is treated as Earnshaw's own children, together with Catherine and Hindley.Earnshaw takes to Heathcliff strangely, the result of which is that “ Heathcliff bred bad feelings in the house.Hindley learns to regard Heathcliff as a usurper of his father‟s affections and his privileges, and he grows bitter with brooding over these injuries.” After Earnshaw‟s death, Heathcliff is bullied and insulted by Hindley, during which Heathcliff and Catherine unite to revolt Hindley and they fall paionately in love with each other. However, Cathy thinks it will degrade her to marry him.Depreed and dejected, he leaves.Three years later he returns, finding Cathy has betrayed him.He starts to seek his revenge. This novel enlightens me and makes me ponder what true love should be like on earth. In the novel, Heathcliff imprees me the most, who lingers in my mind and makes me struggle. On the one hand, without a glimpse of doubt, I love him.I bet he must be a heartthrob for many women.More importantly, I can‟t deny his grave love for Catherine and that‟s exactly where he fascinates me.I can‟t imagine how painful that could be when he heard that the woman he loves isn't willing to marry him.I can‟t tell how hard that can be to erase her out of his memory and when he finds he can‟t, he is back.I „m beyond description and moved to tears when he bursts into tears as no man does before the second he is informed of his lover‟s death.I feel sympathy for him when he cry over her tomb, saying “haunt me!Don‟t leave me in this aby, where I can‟t find you.”

On the other hand, I resent his way of conveying his feeling. If he loves her, as a man, he shouldn‟t leave her at first. His leaving, as far as I can interpret, is a sign of coward, meaning he is not confident or competent enough to make her the happiest woman in the world. If he wants to own her, he should double his effort, trying to figure out what he can do to get rid of this kind of embarraed situation rather than escape and disappear. If he loves her, knowing she is managing her own family, he shouldn‟t step into her life again, for both of them should learn to let it go, for both of them worth taking a shot to begin a new life, for both of them deserve a bright future. As Plato has said, “ If you love, love deeply. If you abandon, please thoroughly.Don't be ambiguous, it's harmful to both.” Conversely, Heathcliff returns and goes to the extremes, choosing to revenge by means of marrying a woman he doesn‟t love just to make his lover jealous and depriving Hindley and Linton of their property even at the expense of their next generation‟s future. That‟t not the man I adore.Hatred has already blinded his eyes, making him unable to discern between right and wrong. It‟s hard to tell my specific feelings.I love him, but another voice is dragging me back, telling me I shouldn‟t.Is a man like him worthy of my affections?
